Sean Campos changed my account type without asking!!!! I recently decided to transfer all of the funds from my Wells Fargo checking account to a local credit union. I've been waiting for everything to clear from the WF account before I do so. After waiting for a bit, there is one check left out there and I have contacted the receiver to ask them to cash the check so it will clear and I can close this WF account. They said they would, but they are behind in processing things and it could be a couple of weeks. However, I figured, since I knew the amount of the check, I could simply subtract it from the amount in my WF checking account and remove the left over amount to be put in my new credit union checking account. I called this WF branch and spoke to Sean Campos about getting a cashier's check in order to transfer the funds. He said that there is customarily a $10 fee for a cashier's check from an account of my type, but that if I came to his branch and spoke with him, he would waive the fee. I went by today and spoke with him in order to get the fee waived. He tooled around on his computer for a few minutes and then announced that he had changed my account type and that now I could get that cashier's check for free. I was surprised that he had changed my account type without asking (he originally said that he would simply waive the fee), and I asked if the new account type had a minimum balance or any fees. He said the new account has a $2500 minimum balance, and that if I do not meet this minimum balance I will be charged a $15 monthly fee. I started my WF account when I was in college, back when it was Wachovia, and have had free checking, no minimum balance, no fees for about 10 years. At this point, after a recent move to Huntsville for my fiance's job, and no job yet of my own, I have less than $250 in my WF checking account. I told him that, clearly, a $2500 minimum balance is way out of my league right now (like 10 times my current balance), and that I cannot afford the $15 monthly fee for not keeping this minimum balance. He informed me that when I found a job and started working I could deposit money and my balance would go up. The audacity! I reminded him that I am closing the account and have no intention of putting more money in the account. He said "Oh, yeah, sorry. I guess I should have asked you first." I asked him to change back the account type. He said that he could not, as my original account was an "old Wachovia acount." So, long story short, Sean Campos tricked me into coming in so that he could change my account type to one that carries a minimum balance and a $15 monthly fee under the auspices that he was "waiving" a $10 fee for a cashier's check. He did this without asking me and without telling me what he was doing. Then, when I was surprised and asked him to change it back, he said that he could not. He knew that these changes would be irreversible from the beginning. He told me he would do something nice, a courtesy, for me (waive a $10 fee) so that he could get me in his office and change my account to one that carries a minimum balance that is 10 times the money I currently OWN, knowing that this will mean I am stuck with a $15 monthly fee. Devious, big banker, very devious. But, thankfully, I spoke with the receiver of the check and they are willing to tear it up and let me write them a new one from my new credit union account. So, tomorrow, I will be marching up to WF and using my new free cashier's check to remove ALL of my funds and put them in my new credit union account. I just hope I won't have accrued a fee over night. Moral of the story: Once again, big banks suck and if they don't realize how much they suck pretty soon, they'll lose ALL of their business to credit unions.
