Story

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings, 200,000 objects, range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe.

On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

The mission of the Yale University Art Gallery is to encourage appreciation and understanding of art and its role in society through direct engagement with original works of art. The Gallery stimulates active learning about art and the creative process through research, teaching, and dialogue among communities of Yale students, faculty, artists, scholars, alumni, and the wider public.

Seems pointless to write a positive review for Yale's art gallery. Wish I could write a snide one. But it's awesome. Perfectly legible intact coins from 300 BC and artwork categorized by nation of origin from ancient to contemporary. And it's free. And graduate art students give a variety of theme-based guided tours. And you should give it a whirl.

I love this place. Free resource! Great African collection and some great paintings are here including “The Night Cafe” by van Gogh. There’s Rothko, Kandinsky, Gorky, Ledger, Braque, Picasso, Duchamp, Pollock, and much more! Don't miss the peaceful sculpture garden on the way out. In my opinion Georges Braque was so much more talented than Picasso but might have lacked in charisma and salesmanship to have the successful long career Picasso enjoyed.

What a great experience. Had fun studying some of the paintings and sculptures. Also make sure to buy some postcards. Also they have great photography books on sale. Overall it was a really fun experience. And the whole area is great too walk around and explore.

Very impressive collection. Quality over quantity. Not overwhelming like some larger museums.

I had a great time here. I think it’s worthy to spend some times here for the abundant collections. There is no admission fee which is quiet nice(You need to pay a lot for museums in Harvard University).
