Went in for basic care at 6 am and they refused to release me until 3pm (9 hours later) the nurses had absolutely no sense of urgency and some ER patients didn't have a room because they were all taken. Please take your business to an urgent care unless you have atleast 8 hours to sit and do nothing. (Had to miss work because they wouldn't release me)

I consider myself lucky that when I moved to the Philly area I ended up moving so near to Abington Memorial. A couple months ago I began experiencing intestinal issues and had vagal reactions including one episode of syncope (fainting). I went to the ER in the early morning and was seen immediately by a triage nurse and escorted to a room. I began having serious symptoms again while in the ER. Being young it was hard to describe what I felt was happening to me because I had never experienced serious medical concerns before. I saw a resident, a student, and a doctor that I believed to be the attending physician who all patiently listened to my symptoms and asked insightful follow up questions, allowing me time to figure out how to explain what I was feeling. Throughout this experience I was given the best care of my life by a nurse named Sean. He was attentive to me, shared anecdotes about his family and explained his thoughts on my symptoms and was quick to reassure me throughout the entire process. One thing I liked about the visit is everyone explained things as they were happening. I became anxious at the idea of a tilt test being performed (heart rate jumped) so Sean listened to my concerns and discussed them with the other members of the medical team. I was given saline and once my symptoms had lessened I was discharged. There was nothing of an emergent nature that they could treat at that time. However, they made sure that I was going to be taken care of. When they discharged me they made sure I had referrals to an excellent local physician, that I had a plan to treat my symptoms in the meantime, and that I had paper copies of all the information we had discussed, the symptoms that were diagnosed, and advice for at home care. Unfortunately, my symptoms did worsen in the next few weeks. I worked with my referred doctor and it was a complicated process because my symptoms seemed oddly put together. I revisited Abington Memorial two weeks later because I began to feel faint in a more serious way. I have to take care of myself here and felt confident that if I went to Abington Memorial again then no matter what was happening to me there would be someone responsible and caring to take care of me. I was discharged with the same result again, which was to be expected. Through a few more weeks of confusion and misery it turned out that I have Celiacs Disease with symptoms a bit more on the less common side of things. Throughout the diagnosing process I worked with Abington Memorial on tests including an echocardiogram and a holtor monitor and also had to visit the hospital in preparation of a CT scan. Other tests accompanied these in other Abington Jefferson locations. Throughout this, frankly awful, time period of my life I have been reassured time and time again by the knowledge and the dedication of the Abington Jefferson staff. I feel confident that I will be safe traveling a couple minutes down the road to Abington Memorial for care should anything further ever happen to me. My only recommendation is that I've learned since diagnosis that Celiacs Disease is hard to narrow down and that there is a not insignificant number of people that suffer with it for a lengthy time period before diagnosis. I hope to work with Celiacs organizations to make Celiacs blood tests more routine for patients presenting with intestinal complaints. I think it's a great place to start.
