Story

The Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center transforms this globally unique destination into an exciting adventure where learning comes naturally through hands-on activities. As the gateway to the Pine Bush, the Discovery Center introduces visitors to everything that makes the Preserve rare and adventurous. With the help of many volunteers, the Discovery Center offers monthly outings and programs about the ecology, natural and cultural history of the pine bush area. The Pine Bush also provides hundreds of volunteers and partners with a rewarding opportunity for hands-on conservation
work. Volunteer researchers help by monitoring rare species and studying habitat quality. Through boundary posting, trail clearing, habitat restoration and interpretive projects, other volunteers are working to make the Preserve safe and enjoyable for all who visit and live here.

Mission

Intense efforts by the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission have protected over 3,300 acres of this beautiful ecosystem. Additional acres, in cooperation with willing landowners will be added until the Preserve is complete. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission consists of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, NYS Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation, City of Albany, Towns of Colonie, and Guilderland, The Nature Conservancy, Albany County and four private citizen representatives. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission was created by the NYS Legislature in 1988 to protect and manage the unique and endangered natural communities and species of the Albany Pine Bush for ecological, recreational and educational benefits. While I wouldn't call this a location to go for a "hike" ... I would say this is a fantastic place to explore nature and much of its beauty. Some of the trails are sandy and are covered with pine needles and leaves so watch your footing. Depending on what trail you end up taking they may be challenging for some individuals. Have s good time, be safe, and enjoy the beauty that is nature.

My daughter, grandchildren and I went February 21, on a really warm day. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely walking the blue trail. Unfortunately, when we got home we discovered my grandson and I had ticks on us. Early for ticks so be cautious and check yourselves folks. We'll be returning in the spring better prepared.

Beautiful preserve. Love to mountain bike here. Some Trails are smooth Sandy Rolling Hills, but some are deep sand with steep hills and twisty path.

Nice set of trails. There were a lot of cars in the parking lot, but we only ran into a couple of people. We did the yellow trail today. Perfect length-not too long and not too short. Nice and peaceful hike until we got to the section that parallels the highway. As other reviewers have said, the trails at the main location were Sandy. Lots of bike tracks in the sand. I would love to mountain bike this. Can't wait to investigate some of the satellite trails.
