Schodack Island State Park

About

Welcome to Schodack Island where a wide variety of outdoor activities are available for adventure and fun; and now CAMPING!

Story

Schodack Island State Park sits off the eastern shore of the Hudson River just south of Albany off of Route 9J. Approximately seven miles of Hudson River and Schodack Creek shoreline bound the 1,052-acre day-use facility. The park has been designated a State Estuary, and a portion of the park shelters a Bird Conservation Area (BCA) that is home to bald eagles, cerulean warblers, blue birds and blue herons that nest in the cottonwood trees. Eight miles of multi-use trails wind through a variety of ecological communities. In addition the park offers an improved bike trail, a volleyball net, horseshoes, a playground, numerous picnic areas, a boat launch and a kayak/canoe launch site. New this year! 67 campsites, 43 of which have 50 amp power! In the fall we celebrate by having a fall festival. Lots of fun and games for the children and adults. In the winter you can enjoy activities including snowshoeing, x/country skiing, and ice skating. Friday night skating under the lights, weather permitting.
The Park is open year round in daylight hours. The comfort station is also open year round and is heated during the winter months.

As your driving in, you get the feel of being in a remote place. Signing in is quiet different than other campgrounds I've been at but I'm not complaining. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The train goes by on a daily basis so expect to hear that often. Grounds are well kept and for the most part the grounds staff are very nice as well. Downfall, I'm from out of state and tried calling about a half hour prior to showing up and no one answered. My daughter and I called and called. Very disappointed. Most campgrounds answer up until 10pm and this was around 8:30pm. I suggest if your the working person who can't sign in at check in, make certain you know how to get here or your in big trouble. It is very easy to get lost even with gps! Also I had to switch site due to ground nest of yellow jackets which I have to say the employees were very helpful with, but being a prior landscaper, when I went back to check, it looked liked it was just covered. Yikes!! Same soft ground and second site but thank goodness we picked one mostly grass! My advice in fall and especially here, pick site with mostly grass!! The facilities were wonderful! So clean and large showers! If your a dog person, this place is definitely for you. I didn't feel too much kindness around so if your a people person, don't bother. Most keep to themselves.

Campground facilities were fantastic; it opened in 2016. There's a "take one, leave one" library at the bathhouse. We wanted to hike & this is not a hiking park. There are a few nice remote feeling walks.
