American Helicopter Museum & Education Center

About

The American Helicopter Museum & Education Center is the premier helicopter museum in the heartland of helicopter innovation.

Story

Established in 1996, the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center collects, restores and displays historical aircraft, chronicles the origin and development of rotary wing aircraft and teaches about their lifesaving missions. As the only helicopter museum in the country it focuses on the science and technology of vertical flight to educate and inspire all generations. The museum displays over 35 civilian and military helicopters, autogiros and convertaplanes. Visitors can climb aboard helicopters of all kinds for a truly unique hands-on experience. The museum is located in historic West Chester, Pennsylvania, where this nation’s rotary wing aviation began and still thrives today.

Awesome experience for the kids. Visited on a weekday and practically had the whole place to ourselves. Great little kids area. A lot of helicopters to see.

The Helecopter Museum is a nice treat for kids and I would give more stars if only. My son 7 and I went into the gift shop at the end of our visit. I purchased some postcards and my son was entertaining himself with a spinning stick. I made sure he put it back before we left the store as the shop lady noticed he was playing with it. My son said that's fine mom I don't want anything, so we walked out. The shop lady started running behind us saying where's my spinner, where's my spinner. I turned around shocked as to why she is behaving in this manner as the shop is now full of people. I was embarrassed and being the only black person in the entire museum I couldn't help but feel targeted. I said to my son let's go back to show the lady you didn't take her spinner. She quickly realized that another kid had taken it however, she did not apologize. She ruined my whole experience and I will never go back nor recommend this place. The shop woman was rude and totally out of order. The staff SUCKED! Know one said hello to us or greeted us the entire time. Racist place black people beware.

We attended a child's birthday party here on a Saturday. It's a nice sized museum with a good variety of aircraft indoors and out. There are a number of interesting exhibits throughout, like a cutaway (piston) engine that you can rotate by hand to see the moving parts, aircraft that you can walk through, and several that you can sit in and work the controls. The larger aircraft are outside and you can walk around them. It was a great place for a kids birthday party; they have a play room and another room where you can serve food and cake. The museum backs up to the West Chester airport and you can watch planes (and helicopters) take off and land.

Dizzying highs and some lows. But as this was my 10th visit I was eligible for their fantastic buy one grounded and mothballed helicopter and get the second 🚁 at half off. Now that is not really true, since I didn't want to spend the $10 fee for entry, so I can only assume that the exhibits might be for sale. You're welcome to let me know if you accidentally find anything out. #HelicopterLivesMatter

It's basically one large room with lots of helicopters. Some interesting displays but smaller than expected - I wouldn't expect to spend more than an hour here. If you're into helicopters you'll probably like it but it probably won't draw you in if that's not your thing.
