Aquarium Of The Bay

About

Protecting, restoring, and inspiring the conservation of San Francisco Bay and its watershed-from the Sierra to the sea.

Story

Aquarium of the Bay partners with The Bay Institute to protect, restore and inspire the conservation of San Francisco Bay, from the Sierra to the sea. Our passion and our work are locally-focused, but have a broad impact that touches upon every major challenge facing our global environment.

Aquarium of the Bay is San Francisco Bay’s Aquarium. We are passionate about providing fun and unforgettable encounters with our natural world in ways that ignite both wonder and conservation. We do this from our 50,000 square foot building at the heart of San Francisco's history and culture. We are nestled in the shadow of Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill on Fisherman’s Wharf at PIER 39, along the City’s “Walkable Waterfront.”

We also own a research vessel and partner with several boat fleets to take our conservation, education and research out on the Bay.

Aquarium of the Bay is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and certified as a Green Business by the city of San Francisco.

The Aquarium was a spur of the moment decision for my wife and I. Mostly to get out of a hot day outside, but we also love sea creatures. Walking through the tubes seeing all of the sharks was awesome. Being able to touch a stingray was also a lot of fun and a great experience. Don't be discouraged if you don't see the otters moving/swimming around. The staff told us they sleep like 16 hours a day, so naturally when we saw them they were sleeping. You also get to see some jellyfish which with the lighting looks really cool. It wasn't the biggest aquarium, but we were able to spend an hour or so and had a fun time

Really compacted Aquarium, for what little space they have it's not too shabby. A little pricey for how much they offer but it helps to think that it goes to a great cause. You enter on the 3 floor; as you make your way through the first exhibits (small aquatic animals) you get to an elevator where a knowledgeable person is operating the elevator. After the elevator reaches the first floor, you exit and enter the jellyfish exhibits which leads to the ocean tunnels where you will see the larger fish (sharks, sting-rays, etc.). This all wraps around back to the elevator. Taking a step back into the elevator, you will be taken to the second floor where you will be able to touch the aquatic life. At the end of these exhibits is the otter exhibit tucked away in a corner by the gift shop entrance. All in all it was a fairly average experience; it was a hot, sunny day when we visited the aquarium.. It was pretty humid and slightly unpleasant with the size of the crowd that was there that day.

The shark tunnel is cool, where you can see various kinds of sharks. And my kids liked the place where they can touch fin fish. But the site is so small so that 1.5 hours would be enough to watch. Presentations are educational and interesting so another 30 minutes are easily spent when the timing is right though.

It's a great place to take the kids. The problem is that it is REALLY small and it gets pretty crowded. The price is a bit high since you will finish going through the whole thing in less than an hour. Buy the kids did enjoy it, especially the tank tunnels, those were awesome!

Not as big or spacious as I thought. Definitely not small either. Prefect size aquarium to visit. Not much to do inside and a bit stuffy at times.
