Story

The first Arbutus Library began as the "Arbutus-Halethorpe Free Library" in 1948 when local residents started a library in the basement of the Arbutus Hardware store at 5417 East Drive. It was such a success that in the early 1950's it became a part of the Baltimore County Public Library system and moved into larger quarters over an A&P supermarket.

In 1962 the library moved to a more modern building at 1581 Sulphur Spring Road. It remained at that location until August 10, 2010 when the current $11 million library, community center and senior center opened at 855 Sulphur Spring Road.

The official opening of the 25,000 square foot LEED silver certified "Green Building" by Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith and other dignitaries took place on August 24, 2010.

Library staff unkind unpleasant patronizing and not kind. Comfy reading chairs have been removed and the staff acts strange and unpleasant. The cantonsville library is not far away and much nicer staff and seating. You can also go there without being treated like a criminal rapist or murder suspect. Our tax dollars pay for rudeness and lack of civility i guess. My w2 forms do not lie and i have paid plenty maryland state taxes. So keep your nasty rude attitude to yourself where it belongs dont visit it on me or i will dish it back.

It's a organized library with lots of space to study, well equipped with lots of computers and friendly staff. I love their quiet Room area with a fireplace. They also have meeting rooms that you can reserve. I love to watch kids section where children come to play games and read with their parents. It's a complete community library.

Came for passports for my family on a Saturday afternoon. Everyone was super friendly and great with the kids. Fast too. And library is great, especially the kids section.

Very quiet. Nice atmosphere. Now they also accept passport application.
