As much as I would love to go on and on explaining what I’m about to say in great detail, I will try to keep it short so this might be read by someone in Troop I who really cares to be the good example and show why this is such a sacred job. I have been passed by State Troopers multiple times(over the years) in the mountain home area who were doing well in excess of 100mph without lights or sirens on. You might ask “how do you know how fast they were going?” Well this is easy to answer with common knowledge. Most people know what it’s like to be standing still in traffic and have someone pass you in another lane doing the 55mph speed limit. Well if I’m already doing 55mph and I got this sensation when I passed then he or she must be pretty dang close to going 55mph faster than myself. This most recent time happened a few days ago and it was different because I almost got rear ended hard. It was while I had my family in the car and we were on the Hwy going through many small but steep hills, with very low long-range visibility. It was the perfect example of why this kind a speeding can kill people. I assume you didn’t see me in front of him and when he crested the hill he had to slam on the brakes. I could hear his tires as he swerved around me and then immediately floored it again. It happened so fast and I was in such shock that I didn’t get his plate number. I would have filed a complaint this time but I had no number. I’m sure they don’t take civilian complaints seriously most of the time but I would have done it anyways to clear my conscience knowing I did what I could to stop a future accident. I hope and pray he had a good reason to be going that fast because whether Troopers and Officers admit it to themselves, they do risk other people’s live by speeding to that degree. The driving courses they are required to take do not make them infallible. They are still human. I don’t know what I would have done to that Trooper if he would have injured my family. Big tuff cool bravado or feeling above the law should not be reasons you are a Law Enforcer. My uncle was a police officer in another state and he chose a different line of work after a few years because of the culture of his department. He witnessed police officers first hand were speeding for personal(none emergency related) reasons, there was large citation quotas expected, and just a general abuse of the uniform. I hope that academies, troops, departments start to put more emphasis on the integrity required by wearing such a sacred uniform. Cronyism has no place in such a important job. Don’t forget you are paid by and to serve the tax payers. God Bless the ones who do the right thing even when they know there will be no consequence for doing the opposite. One last thing I would like to add is I wish there was a requirement that ALL police, sheriffs, and troopers had to use the visual and audible warning systems while traveling above the speed limit. There is enough computing power on board every patrol car to regularly monitor correct usage. Simple software on existing systems could fix this.

My daughter was in an accident this past Saturday on Hwy. 14, near Lead Hill on a stretch of road that the nurse on the scene conveyed to me, sees at least a half a dozen accidents monthly. Not only was Trooper Paul Robson utterly uncaring of my daughter's condition, he had the audacity to write her a citation, even though he entered on the ticket that she was traveling the speed limit and in spite of a lack of proper road signs indicating the presence of gravel road intersection ahead that had a cake of gravel over the highway, sending my daughter's car spinning out of control, without the ability to react. If you travel through this stretch of the state, let the driver beware. You'll not only face an area where the state refuses to alert motorists to potentially hazardous road conditions, you'll encounter a State Police force who's only interest is not public safety, its padding state revenue.

Sunday, Jul 10th, my wife fell asleep at the wheel on Hwy 14 near the New Hope Baptist Church. She ran off the road and totaled our car. A state trooper was quickly on the spot, and later one came to my door, and we do live way off in the boondocks. We want to thank the officers involved very much in addition to the very helpful people at that church, and the folks from Dano's Garage in Lead Hill for helping in every way they could. Fortunately, my wife walked away from the accident with a few very bad bruises. We are very thankful for the State Police!!!!
