Historic museum house dating back to the 1700s. Good educational activity on a rainy (or sunny!) day. Beautiful gardens. Visit Joshua's Store for souvenirs and the carriage house for a look at the granite industry exhibit.

FANTASTIC MUSEUM, BEAUTIFUL COLONIAL PERIOD MANSION. We visited this wonderful historic home and museum today. Docent Meg gave us a personal tour covering not only the house itself and the wonderful period pieces within, but the tour starts in the newly renovated carriage house full of artifacts and pictures bringing to life the history of Westerly and the granite industry. Meg was more than gracious, her knowledge of the history of the house and the community was both wide and deep. I learned a number of interesting facts - new to me even though I grew up in New England and have been on many historic tours. Tea bricks (used as currency), why ovens were moved from behind the fireplace to the side (the second highest cause of death for colonial women after childbirth was caused by their skirts catching fire.) This 'mansion' of the colonial period - is full of interesting facts and antiques. ... Learn the origin of idioms such as "a windfall", "sleep tight" and "a skeleton in the closet". See, learn and understand: a 'wag on the wall' clock, how flax turns into linen. A great visit - interesting to three generations, including two teenagers.
