Story

Luther “Lou” Hillman was born and raised in Texas, graduated from Ball High School in Galveston. He attended Baylor University, graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Political Science. He attended Baylor Law School in 1960 taking basic law courses. He fulfilled his required military service obligation in the Texas Air National Guard from 1960-1961. His career began in 1961 in Houston with Dun and Bradstreet where he was a business analyst until 1963.

In 1963 Lou was offered the position of Chamber of Commerce General Manager for the City of Trinity, Texas. During this period of time, most cities relied upon Chamber of Commerce officials to perform all of the duties and responsibilities now typically performed by a city’s Director of Economic Development. Lou managed to reverse a declining city economy by attracting significant business to Trinity. During this same time period, Lou initiated work on the Lake Livingston project. Successful meeting, with Louis Welch led to the construction of Lake Livingston, which now provides water to Houston, as well as serving as a beautiful recreational resource.

Due to his accomplishments in Trinity, the Chamber of Commerce in Grapevine, Texas offered Lou the position of General Manager. Over the next 9 years, Lou continued gaining significant experience in economic development, assisting numerous cities throughout the Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex with development and expansion of their economic development programs: • Member of Employee Relocation Council (ERC) since 1977 • Charter Member, Grapevine Rotary Club • General Manager / President Grapevine Chamber of Commerce • First CEO, Northwest Dallas Chamber of Commerce (now the Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce) • President, Northeast Tarrant County Board of Realtors • Board of Directors, Texas Association of Realtors • Board of Directors, North Texas Real Estate Commission • Led Cities of Addison, Carrollton, Farmers Branch, and Coppell to become some the some of the most prosperous suburban cities in entire Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex • Served Grapevine as one of the pioneer members of DFW International Airport development team • Worked with Ernest Dean of Tippets-Abbet-McCarthy-Stratton, as original designers of DFW International Airport project • Appointed by Young & Rubicam to direct marketing and advertising for Chrysler-Plymouth throughout State of Texas • At initial meeting with Robert Crandall and Tom Plaskett in relocation of American Airlines headquarters from New York to Dallas-Fort Worth • Involved in Development of Heritage Business Park (the largest business part in Grapevine and Southlake) • One of the first business leaders working on the location of Gaylord Texas Resort & Convention Center in the City of Grapevine • Actively involved with numerous international business development ventures.

In 1972, Lou embarked on a career in commercial and residential real estate, opening Lou Hillman Red Carpet Realtors in Grapevine. He continues his successful 40-year career in real estate through the current time, as owner and general manager of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Lou Hillman, Realtors.

Lou now resides in Southlake, Texas, where he actively serves the community in which he resides. Lou was designated as Realtor Emeritus by the National Association of Realtors in 2014.
