I spent a lot time here when I was in high school. I recently returned to visit after more than 25 years away. I never realized how amazing this library was. It is one of the oldest public libraries in the country. This is actually two libraries: the old building which houses rare books collection, and the modern building which is state of the art, see pictures below. It is a must see place if you are visiting Boston.

I just love wandering around the BPL. The rooms and courtyard of the older building are just gorgeous and feel like the private residence of some long-deposed ancient royal family. They have lots of special events like the incredible Shakespeare exhibit this year. Apart from their physical books, they have a large e-book collection that I highly recommend. It's easy to borrow e-books and you never have to worry about due dates and fees.

Beautiful library, classic must-see for Boston tourists. If you're looking for a place to study, be advised that the new side is so smelly! They did a big beautiful renovation and included a cafe, but as a result of the cafe, the entire new building stinks and not of yummy cooking food, but it smells like chemicals. It smells like burning plastic. Gross. I asked and a staff member said that it always smells like that when they cook a specific food. It's not all the time but it comes and goes. When it's bad, it makes me wonder if we're all breathing in toxins. Not sure if something is too close to a heating element as a result of a design flaw or what, but this is not a food smell. It's a chemical smell. Gross! Otherwise, beautiful library with helpful librarians and lovely new brightly colored spaces. Children's area is a must see for anyone with kids.

This building was beautiful. We didn't really use it as a library, but rather walked around to see the art and the architecture and were not disappointed. Very quiet and peaceful inside the old section, and very modern in the newer section.

The old part of the library is simply spectacular! The library is right in the heart of Copley Square, the hub of downtown Boston. The library offers a free art and architecture every day of the week, led my volunteers. I've been on the tour twice. The tours last for about an hour and 15 minutes. Click here to view the tour schedule. http://www.bpl.org/central/tours.htm Grab something to eat in the cafe and enjoy the outside courtyard. You'll feel like you're in Italy.
