Story

The Watertown Free Public Library extends beyond its walls to connect people to ideas, information, education, creative opportunities, and to each other. While preserving the rich history of Watertown, the WFPL embraces the advancement of library service, inspires personal development, and promotes community. The library provides free recreation, entertainment, and enrichment. It welcomes and serves everyone.

The Watertown Free Public Library has been community based from its earliest days. Solon Whitney was named our first librarian in 1867. Throughout his 50 year career he publicly stated his firm belief that the library belonged to the citizens. This is still our basic belief today. During Whitney’s tenure our 1884 building was constructed. Now that building has been completely renovated with an addition that provides services for the 21st. century.

In 2010, a community based committee completed a Long Range Plan for the Library. Central to this plan is the concept of the Watertown Free Public Library as a hub where all come to meet and connect in a welcoming, supportive environment. Watertown citizens have a library where they can pursue interests of all kinds - informational, recreational and educational.

This is a very nice library. The building is pretty and the inside is clean. It has a good area for kids and some convenient meeting rooms as well. You've got your typical crowd using the free computers, but if you bring your laptop the wifi is excellent. Their collection seems well stocked too. The only knocks I can give this library is that it's not as quiet as others and it could use some cozy spots to tuck yourself away so you can really immerse yourself in a book or your work.

Great library with tons of extra stuff for the kids and fantastic study and quiet areas for the adults. Plus a mystery door!
