About

The Museum is located at the Rideau Canal’s Ottawa locks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between Parliament Hill and the Fairmont Château Laurier hotel.

Story

Located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the Bytown Museum explores the stories of an evolving city and its residents from its early days as Bytown to present day Ottawa.

Housed in Ottawa's oldest stone building, the Museum is located at the Rideau Canal locks between Parliament Hill and the Château Laurier—one of the most picturesque sites in the city.

Join us for family events, new exhibits and daily programs and guided tours. A six-language audio-tour, available in English, French, German, Spanish, Mandarin and Japanese, is included with the admission ticket.

The Museum is open all year.

The Bytown Museum is a very nice accompaniment to the Rideau Canal. While definitely not a must-see, for a very small price you can get an in-depth history of the Canal and Ottawa. It's easy to spend at least an hour here with many well-preserved artifacts and interesting videos, despite the small building. As a tourist, it was great to learn more about the capital of Canada during my trip.
