About

Authentic Chinese food in a 1930's Shanghai setting. Space/Concept Design: Yiming Wang

Story

We've set out to re-imagine the Chinese cuisine experience. Taking pages out of Eileen Chang's Love In a Fallen City, add in a bit of Coco Chanel, and mix it up with a lot of authentic Chinese food - emphasis on authentic, we want to give our guests an experience that is unlike any other Chinese restaurant.

I ate there on a Saturday afternoon. We walked in at 3:30ish and were told there would be a wait if 30-45 min. So we left our number and went for a walk. In 11 min we get a text saying our table was ready. We hurried back not sure if our table might be given away but there was no need for concern as the restaurant began to empty at that point and there were a bunch of empty tables shortly thereafter. We ordered a few entrees and vegetables to share and everything was amazing. The 3 Pepper Chicken stretched our spice tolerance level but enjoyed it all the more. Overall I loved this restaurant and will be back one day with a large group as you can order tons of different items and share everything. Well deserved Michelin Star here!

Intense, authentic flavor. Very good. Casual date or small group hangout spot. Not too expensive. Be careful on two things: (1) it is more spicy to the average American than the servers tell you (2) be aware they serve dishes with peppercorn and other tongue-numbing ingredients you can have removed.

Nice atmosphere with delicious food. The dumplings in chili oil are so slippery, but worth the effort! You'll want to get as much of that sweet and spicy sauce on each bite too. The spicy cumin lamb was hands down the winner of the day (another chicken dish was ordered as well, which was just ok and not memorable). The portions were surprisingly large, and we had to take leftover lamb and rice back to the hotel. Happy to report that it was just as delicious as leftovers, if not *extra* delicious as a late night snack after drinking lol.

The staff went out of their way to help us here. Initially, there was only seats at the bar available but as soon as a table became available, they helped us to relocate. The Asian menu is fairly priced but we weren’t wow-ed by the dumplings. They were okay but maybe good for a New York standard. Try and get a reservation because there’s always a queue over lunch.

It's a good place for Chinese food. The food is reasonably spicy. I was a little let down by the fact that they did not serve green tea. I liked Haan Dynasty better!
