Went bc my dog appears to have a tooth infection with swelling around one tooth causing a growth to cover part of the tooth. Doc looked for about 3 min but could not tell me what was the problem exactly. Just a few suggestions of what it could be. She left to draw up an estimate and told me the growth needs to be cut out and that there was no medicine that would remedy the swelling. I asked the vet tech assistant if it was an infection but she said no. Ended up paying $65 for the visit and left the office feeling just as confused as I was before I came here. Probably won't be back. Can't trust them with my precious.

Last year, I took my cat in to Campus Veterinary Clinic for a left canine tooth that was starting to "sag" a little bit and show its tip sometimes when my cat's mouth was closed. I had read that this might be a sign of a swelling or abscess at the root, so even though it appeared to cause her no pain, I wanted to take no chances. The vet at Campus Veterinary Clinic told me that my cat had FORL (feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions). This is a very painful degenerative condition that causes the body to absorb parts of its own teeth and leaves the teeth full of holes, both above and below the gumline--tooth roots can end up looking like Swiss cheese. The vet said my cat's canine was starting to come out because its root was damaged by FORL, and she said she saw another tooth that had a pink hole in it above the gumline that was also a sign of FORL. She said there was no way to say before surgery just how many teeth might be affected, but over time, they might all have to be pulled. She worked up a written estimate for tooth surgery for my cat that ranged from $890 to $1200 depending on what the X-rays showed, but she also warned me to stay by my phone because the costs could go up from there. A little research turned up a low-cost non-profit feline dental service in Sacramento: Cats About Town. Rather than take my cat back to Campus Veterinary Clinic, I took my cat to them for surgery. I brought her in along with a letter about her FORL diagnosis (which mentioned the other tooth the vet saw that had a hole in it) and the dental surgery estimate sheet from Campus Veterinary Clinic. $400 later, my cat's sagging canine was removed, and she was drowsing on aftercare pain meds. And I had a story to tell. It turns out that the vet who does their dental work put my cat under, cleaned her teeth, and then started exploring what might be wrong with her mouth. After a thorough examination, that vet asked, "Why is this cat here? She's perfectly healthy!" So the vet stopped surgery to read through the dental surgery estimate and my letter. He or she went ahead and removed the sagging canine since it was obvious the Campus Veterinary Clinic vet had intended to remove it. But the tooth was a good healthy tooth! The vet sent it along in a plastic bag so I could see that it had no evidence of FORL lesions at all, either above or below the gumline. And the vet also reported that he or she could not find any evidence of any pink holes in my cat's teeth. So now I don't know. Was the Campus Veterinary Clinic vet just too hasty in her diagnosis? Would she, too, have told me after surgery that she had removed a perfectly healthy tooth? Or would she have charged me $890 dollars--or more--and told me that my cat's mouth was full of FORL lesions--lesions that would set up several more years of very expensive and painful surgeries? I don't know. But I won't be coming back to Campus Veterinary Clinic to find out.
