Story

Cape Henlopen State Park is a Delaware state park on on Cape Henlopen in Sussex County, Delaware, in the United States. William Penn made the beaches of Cape Henlopen one of the first public lands established in what has become the United States in 1682 with the declaration that Cape Henlopen would be for "the usage of the citizens of Lewes and Sussex County." Cape Henlopen State Park has a 24-hour and year-round fishing pier as well as campgrounds. The remainder of the park is only open from sunrise to sunset, and includes a bathhouse on the Atlantic Ocean, an area for surf-fishing, a disc golf course, and bicycle and walking paths. The beach at Herring Point is a popular surfing spot. The park is a stop on Delaware's Coastal Heritage Greenway. As with all Delaware state beaches, entrance is free during the off-season but costs $5 daily or $35 annually for Delaware-tagged vehicles and $10 daily or $70 annually for out of state vehicles from 1 March to 30 November. Surf fishing season passes may be purchased at a cost of $80 per in-state vehicle and $160 per out-of-state vehicle. There are lower rates for the military, those getting social services and senior citizens. These passes provide access to all state beaches and parks in Delaware.HistoryCape Henlopen, on Delaware Bay, has long been a public use area although it did not officially become a Delaware state park until 1964. William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania and early leader of Delaware, decreed that Cape Henlopen and its natural resources be set aside for the use and enjoyment of the citizens of the Delaware Colony. Penn's decree established Cape Henlopen as one of the first public use parcels of land in the Thirteen Colonies.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The park was very mellow and relaxing but also new and modern at the same time. I can't hear a few days while on my walk down the Delaware and Maryland Coasts. I had stated Delaware Seashore State Park a couple days before and it was loud and basically just a parking lot so I was very excited to get to Cape Henlopen. It was amazing coming from Rehoboth Beach. The campground has an amazing nature trail that you can walk or bike with spectacular views of water and Marsh land. I really appreciated that the campground had a store that was open several hours a day that you could buy a few groceries and drinks. I also took advantage of the laundry room. They also have the nicest bathrooms I have ever seen in a state Campground. Instead of the usual shared bathrooms and showers they have individual rooms that each contain a toilet a sink and shower that is yours. Looking forward to returning some day.

We visited in September when the park was open for surf fishing. Without a permit, we drove as far as we could, and then walked all the way to the tip of Cape Henlopen. It was worth the long walk. The current churns up the waves right at the tip, and seabirds were flying above the water, diving in repeatedly after whatever delectables were being stirred up. Take a few hours to make this walk. It's something we will never forget.

We love to go to cape henlopen every time we come to the DE seashore. There are a few different entrances that give beach access. One leads to the fishing pier which also has bathrooms, a pavillion & a place to rent kayaks & sups by the hour or by the day. Short walk to the beach & is nice for kids because the water is shallow & at low tide it goes way out so lots of people dig for clams ( need a license). There is also the drive out beach which you do need a special pass to do but if you drive out, you must be actively fishing ( you pole must be in the water) & you need to have a shovel, board and fishing tackle with you. The park rangers do check! You also can walk out at any of these places. Herring point is where mist people walk out & surf because of the rock wall breaker there. The only thing to note is that this beach can be buggy, especially with onshore wind so remember the bug spray and it gets crowded here so you may have to walk a little ways down the road to get to the beach. There are also educational centers here and activities. People can also camp here. There is a park pass that you must purchase and rates are different for in-state & out of state visitors. Check the website for more detailed information.

In all fairness, my review is based on the beach only - since that's the only area I have explored so far. Entrance fee is $10 cash only - be prepared, I had to turn around and drive a few miles to downtown Lewes before I got to an ATM. The person at the gate was very friendly. The beach was very clean, very quiet, and very uncrowded, but not totally empty - honestly, it was perfect. The dunes around the beach are very pretty as well. It looked like there were bathrooms/showers across from the parking lot, though we didn't use them. I look forward to returning to see more of the park, since it looked really lovely while we drove through.
