I would most definitely NOT recommend Dr. Karen Wilson, DDS at Cedar Valley Family Medicine in Marion, IA.  However, I never thought I would say that...Her facility is BEAUTIFUL and they offer so many wonderful amenities that I haven't seen at other dentist offices.  I didn't have to wait long to be called back, the staff is generally very nice, and the doctor herself took time to talk to me and discuss options.  My main concern is that I believe Dr. Wilson does a lot unnecessary work...And that IS NOT an over-exaggeration.

I have never had trouble with my teeth in my life.  Just a few cavities here and there, but I take very good care of my teeth and genetically have good teeth.  Prior to seeing Dr. Wilson, it had been two years since I last saw a dentist.  At that time, I only had two cavities, they were filled, and I went on with life.  When I went to see Dr. Wilson, I was told that NOT ONLY did I have ELEVEN CAVITIES, I also had tooth decay, gum disease, and would need crowns and root canals in the future.  WHAT?!?!  I'm not one to assume the worst in someone without a decent impression, so I let her fill most of my cavities.  Every time I went to have cavities filled, I was given more and more bad news.  To be honest, I was scared out of my mind because none of this had EVER happened to me in my life.  But I started to develop an impression of what Cedar Valley Family Dentistry is REALLY all about.

At my last filling appointment with Dr. Wilson, I asked her to take a look at a wisdom tooth that was coming in.  She claimed that I had an infected wisdom tooth and would need to see a oral surgeon about removing it.  I saw the oral surgeon she recommended and he was a real jerk...But that's beside the point.  He said I needed to have the tooth removed as soon as possible because it was very infected and "even if it wasn't bothering me, it still needed to be removed."  His attitude, however, caused me to get wise and seek a second opinion.  A friend told me about a "practical" dentist that she sees and upon further inspection of their website, I noticed they do consultations for oral surgery...So I went to see him.  He said that my tooth was NOT infected and if it wasn't bothering me, I shouldn't have it removed.

This is quite a long story, but basically, I only had so much of my annual benefits left that I was going to use on the wisdom tooth if it needed to be removed because that seemed more pressing.  So I never had two cavities filled (according to Dr. Wilson) and I was planning to wait until a new year began to have those filled.  In April, I had an appointment with a new dentist to have my cleaning.  I expected that I would have at least two cavities to fill (those that hadn't been filled 6 months ago).  After talking to the new doctor for awhile, he said I was finished.  I looked at him, shocked, and said, "Do I have any cavities?"  He said, "Nope, no cavities...Keep doing what you're doing."  THAT IS PROOF that Dr. Wilson is only out for one thing...MONEY to pay for her nice facility.  MONEY to pay for all the nice amenities they offer (that aren't even necessary, mind you).  MONEY to keep up appearances.  I have so many stories I could share with you to confirm these accusations, but this will have to do for now.

Believe me, DR. KAREN WILSON WILL DO UNNECESSARY WORK.  I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt...And in this case, maybe she really does know something that other dentists don't.  But I think that to be very unlikely.  PLEASE do yourself a favor...Find a different dentist who will be practical, honest, and have integrity.  Unfortunately, I don't think Dr. Wilson is this person for me.

UPDATE (2017):  I wrote this review several years ago and I still stand by it.  I am still dealing with the damage Dr. Wilson did...Now I am having to have a crown placed due to her excessive drilling on my teeth.  I'm still angry and frustrated that I let Dr. Wilson do a lot of unnecessary work on my teeth that can never be undone.  :(

My family has been going to her for several years.  She is great with my husband and I but also great for our kids.  They are no longer anxious to go to the dentist.  The environment is beautiful and relaxing and the technicians tell my kids exactly what they are doing before they do it so they are prepared.  Great place. Highly recommend!!

I love Dr. Wilson and feel very comfortable in he care! I am a former dental assistant and am very careful to who works in my mouth. She is great! I drive over 40 miles one way to go to her! She is amazing and I couldn't see our family going to anyone else.

karen wilson dds  -Is a true SCAM ARTIST.... she attempted and preformed dental  work that was NOT needed, consistently told me I had gum disease, I got quotes from 3 other dentists in the area and they all said my teeth looked great and needed a few minor things done.... 
She over quotes, over charges, and is basically a really bad person to think she could get away with it, of course she is very witty with words and gives away very expensive electric toothbrushes and has TV’s, wax treatments and a bran new dental office that makes you feel right at home as you get ripped off for every cent. 
Hygienist's -- too inexperienced and gave shots that made my forehead, noise and cheek numb for 5 hours after my un needed "filling work"
