The Chinese VISA should be applied with a typed application form. Handwritten application form won't be accepted. According to Chinese Embassy website, both original and copy of US passport, expired Chinese passports, proof of immigration status such as naturalization certificate or permanent resident card are required. Additional documents may be required by the consular on a case by case basis. Those who work for sensitive government agencies will be asked to provide a letter of job description. The letter should contain job title, job description, purpose of trip, etc. These is no way to figure out those unstated rules in advance. You can either figure out all the pitfalls through repeated rejections, or hire an VISA delegate agent who is familiar with the process. The fifty dollar service fee is quite reasonable, considering the average 2-3 hour waiting time in the line, 2 hour drive time on the road, and the extremely high rejection rate. The Chinese Embassy does not necessarily abide by US customs or rules. Do not make any assumptions or take things for granted. For instance, do not expect that the Embassy will open right after Christmas, even when US government agencies do so. Do not always rely on the open/close status from google or the Embassy's website. The Embassy has its unique and spontaneous ways to communication its status. It may choose to just post an office closed notification on a piece of paper in front of the locked office door. The good thing is you will find out you are not the only stupid one, if you are not too mad to finish reading the complaints left by people who arrived at an earlier time. For those who pickup their VISA, do not assume that the consulars will work through their lunch. The pickup window is closed from 12:30 to 1:30. Do not be foolish to arrive at the pickup window at 12:28. For child born in USA by Chinese parents, if one of the parents was not granted US permanent resident card upon birth of the child, the child is deemed Chinese citizen in Chinese Law. The child should apply for Travel Document, rather than Chinese VISA. The key document is your permanent resident card, which determines whether your child should apply for Travel Document or VISA. Make sure your have it with you. If the card is taken away during naturalization, make sure you have a copy of it. Do not question the rationale and soundness of the logic behind the rules. If you want to enter China, you'd better get used to listen and follow rules. Travel document must be applied online. Appointment is required and must be made online. The consular needs to meet the child and both parents in person. The business hour is 9:30-2:30 daily. Pack lunch, snacks, and entertainments. Be flexible enough to pull the child and yourself from school and work unless you want to wait till summer break. Despite all the troubles, the TEN year multiple entry VISA is well worth jumping through all the hoops. As long as your name and sex identification remain unchanged, the Chinese VISA can outlive your passport. Keep both the expired and valid passport when entering China. Good luck!

Extremely long wait times along with ambiguous instructions and consular employees that seem to drift in and out on their own accord made this visit a frustrating and pointless affair. And the funny thing is that you don't have a choice in the matter. This isn't a restaurant or business and they simply don't care whether you're annoyed or not. To them, you're a number. Not only were the instructions given incorrectly on the website for a simple tourist Visa (of which the embassy of India has this place beaten by leagues), but the only employee I actually ended up respecting was the security guard. On top of this were people cutting in line without any regard for those that waited legitimately and consular employees that don't speak a word of legible English. This place is a necessary evil to get your Visa and the entire affair from start to end is like crawling through a tunnel of course sandpaper to get to the light at the end.

This is a typical government agency, dealing with official documents, with specific, not flexible rules. So, they are not in hospitality industry where customer is always right. Here, they are always right. If you come here to get things done, with the right attitude, you should have a decent experience. I was there yesterday, helping someone getting travel documents done. So, I had a good chance watching all the agents work and how they treat the applicants. I was there about two hours, from 9:30 to 11:30. I did not observe any rudeness. All officer at the window are smiling, courteous, and helpful. it's a lot better than at local DMV. There are many things that can be improved: They should have at least one guard speak Chinese as many applicant speaks Chinese and English is not their first language. All guards should speak English! The head guards should learn how to dealing with crowds, firm and courteous, not loud and controlling. The speaker that announcing the numbers are just too loud! The office environments should be more professional, I saw janitorial staff cleaning in the office area while the officers are dealing with applicants. I also saw some officials are chatting amongst themselves, a bit none professional. They should improve their website and make it the official source of information. They should have one information officer to deal with Q&R. Above all, they should have a office manager that capable enough to tidy things up and improve their rating.

Loved this location comparing to the one in NYC. Way easier parking, very nice clerk and very professional service. Security staff liked to joke around :)

I was angry and frustratred, i didn research on the website and was EXPECTING this to be easy and fast. While the website can definitely be improved, the visa office employees were very efficient; #'s were called constantly, and even with over 75 people waiting in the room, the traffic moved steady. The security guards were stern but helpful. And the staff upstairs were very NICE. There is a clean bathroom in the back, about 50 seating so get there early. And they allow water, so bring a drink, cuz this will take ALL DAY, and MULTIPLE attempts. Keep in mind, each different visa requires different documents. So make copy of EVERYTHING!! Birth cert. Passport, driver's license, every government license you got. Passport photoes, invitation letters...EVERYTHING. they do not answer phone calls, so dont bother calling the visa office. USE their Website, or call Oasis travel agency upstairs. This is a foreign embassy visa office, the employees has to follow a very strict guardline, and they are not diplomats, (or robots!! Let them eat lunch!!) they are HUMAN EMPLOYEES; English speaking Chinese people, whom has VERY different etiquettes from Europeans. Thats why some people felt other Chinese speaking customers are getting special treatments. Over all, BE RESPONSIBLE AND DO THE RESEARCH, BE RESPECTFUL, PATIENT, considerate of others, no country want some arragent asshat to come visit.
