Chofetz Chayim is a synagogue in Tucson, Arizona.
Chofetz Chayim was established in 1979, by Rabbi Israel Becker and his wife Esther. In August of 1979, a small, former barbershop became the home of the synagogue. The new Congregation experienced rapid growth, and in May 1979, the Congregation purchased a house on 5th Street, which became the home of the synagogue until 1984. During those early years, since the small facility was unable to accommodate large amounts of attendees, major events were held in other facilities and high holiday services were held at the historic Granada Hotel, which is now the Embassy Suites on Broadway.
In July 1984, the dream that seemed impossible was realized. The young Congregation purchased a beautiful facility on 2 acres of land at 5150 E. 5th Street, where it has blossomed ever since.
In 1986 the Southwest Torah Institute was established to open classes to all Jews regardless of affiliation. As the educational and outreach arm of Congregation Chofetz Chayim, the Southwest Torah Institute is a totally separate entity established for members of other congregations and the unaffiliated, designed to focus on the needs of all Jews in Tucson regardless of background or commitment. Synagogue membership is not required.
In 1997 the Women’s Academy of Jewish Studies (WAJS) was founded as a division of the Southwest Torah Institute in order to respond to the educational, moral, ethical and spiritual needs of Southern Arizona’s Jewish Women. It provides the opportunity for women to experience in-depth Jewish learning together with other women and presented by women.
Any visitor who enters Chofetz Chayim is welcomed and feels right at home. To provide an extraordinary experience, we offer meaningful daily and Shabbos services (morning minyan, afternoon & evening services), engaging educational opportunities for all ages and joyous events and celebrations. We are a Tucson resource for all areas of Jewish observance and Jewish life.
Chofetz Chayim is a friendly and accepting shul for people of all backgrounds. The Beckers are so warm and caring and lead by example. There is no pressure, just inspiration and love for Judaism.
