Organic, Hearth Baked, Sourdough Bread

Story

contact: [email protected]

Community Loaves started in 2011 here in Jacksonville as an organic bike-delivered subscription bakery. Sarah, one of the founders, and Meredith, the other half of the baking duo, met in the fall of 2012 when Meredith moved home to Jacksonville. Sarah was looking for a new baking partner and Meredith had just completed an apprenticeship at an organic sourdough bakery in England. Fate!

We now bake all organic, sourdough bread and are excited to be part of the growing community of movers and shakers in Jacksonville, where the passion for thoughtful food is on the rise.

About the bread:
Sourdough is a process of baking bread without the use of commercial yeast. Instead, naturally occurring yeast and lacto-bacteria are captured and kept alive in a "sourdough starter." In combination with a long fermentation time, these methods create a healthier, more traditional (and more delicious!) bread. Sourdough bread, in comparison with conventional "yeasted" bread has a lower glycemic index, more available nutrients, stays fresher for longer, breaks down more gluten, and pre-digests starches, making it easier on our digestive system. All of our bread is made with organic ingredients and hearth-baked. Don't take our word for it, try it!

Tips on Bread Storage:
Get a bread box! But short of that you can just loosely tie a plastic bag (one of those grocery store bags everyone has a few of in the house) and leave your bread on the counter. This prevents your loaf from drying out, while also allowing a little but of air in to help prevent mold.

As of October 2013 we deliver fresh bread to the following locations:

Tuesday- Grassroots and both Native Suns locations

Wednesday- Sweet Theory, Mid Week Market in Atlantic Beach (3-6pm), Black Sheep

Thursday- Grassroots

Friday- Grassroots, both Native Sun locations, Sweet Theory

Saturday- Grassroots

And we are also at the Riverside Arts Market on Saturdays!

Very hipster setting. For a place named community loaves the everything bagel was very closed textured and hard to bite into. Would not recommend their bread. But the pastries were great! Also parking is a nightmare.

Best egg sandwiches I've ever had. The sweets are always amazing, and I love the lavender syrup in my coffee. I also love that they sell containers of pizza dough, which have always turned out great pizzas for me. Even beyond all that, the place is adorable and always playing good music. I love coming here. One of my favorite brunch spots in Jax.

I love the bread here! It is second to none! But I did a special order a week in advance for 3 loaves, after I specifically asked how I should reserve these items for the day before Christmas Eve. I knew they would be busy and I had plans to go out of town. They apparently had a system for these types of special orders and told me I could pick up anytime after 9am. Anyway, they did not set the order aside and did not have my bread. I was very disappointed because I was getting them as dinner gifts. I'm not sure if it is the system they have in place or the lax attitude of some of the workers. But I will think twice about getting bread here for any special occasion.

The taste and quality of the ingredients used in every item from the baked goods to the lunch items on the menu makes this location stand out. If you are looking for something to try I recommend the cake (flavors rotate daily) as it will blow away anything you have ever tried before. A piece of cake and a cup of their local coffee are an excellent way to give this place a try.

I went today expecting a 5 star place, not so much, my croissant was a bit burnt, soup cold, and my daughter was not impressed with the grilled cheese. Dinning area was dark and seamed a bit unfriendly in there. Unfortunately I won't be back to try again. To over priced for what you get. Oh the reason I gave an extra star was there sweet tea with peppermint was excellent.
