My grandmother was admitted to this facility due to a stroke she had suffered. The stroke had an impact on her speech, her strength in the right side, her vision, and her ability to swallow. Her hearing was fine, her lungs were alright but breathing treatments were prescribed since she was a life-long smoker and there was some damage as a result of that behavior. When the respiratory therapist first interacted with grandma he assumed she was deaf and got right in her face and was literally yelling at her. She isn't deaf and the stroke had no impact on her hearing. If someone would have done this to me I would have yelled right back in their face or probably punched them. My grandma didn't fortunately; though I really wish she would have. One of the nurses assigned to administer the breathing treatments was horrible at it. The band that goes around the head to hold the face mask in place wasn't situated correctly and would cause the mask to ride up into grandma's eyes instead of her nose. Whenever grandma would try to adjust the mask herself the nurse would bat her hand away and say that she shouldn't touch the mask. The nurse didn't realize grandma was trying to get the mask to fit better and instead assumed she was trying to remove it. The nurse was oblivious to the face mask not sitting properly. Even after I had told her about it and fixed it myself when I saw it happening, but the repeated treatments I witnessed showed the exact same problem. The nurses blatantly lied on the charts stating that they were having to assist grandma with eating; despite direct observational evidence to the contrary. My sister and I had lunch with her a number of times and she didn't require any assistance and wasn't supervised at all by the medical staff. When I came into visit one day, the nurse told me that we as the family need to make sure that grandma is drinking enough water throughout the day. My understanding was that this is part of the responsibility of the REHABILITATION facility. The absurdity that we as the family need to be there to enforce drinking water throughout the day struck me as so unreal I couldn't even think of anything to say in response. The general observation of the other patients on the floor indicated that the nurses were reactive instead of proactive in their duties and responsibilities. The nurses keep all patients under a seat belt and sensor alarm so that if they move or get up the alarm goes off and the nurses put them back in the seat and turn the alarm back on. The nurses then go back to the nursing station and watch the news or play on Facebook which is clearly their bigger concern rather than making sure their doing their jobs and that the patients are doing well. One would think that as a REHABILITATION facility they would want to promote more movement of their patients and help them recover faster. This behavior by the staff suggests otherwise. They clearly do not give any thought to the well-being of their patients. The coup-de-grace however was when the aforementioned discrepancies and others that I couldn't include due to character limits were discussed with the case manager. As a response to these issues she accelerated the discharge date in an attempt to get rid of the problem before it was escalated further up the business administration. This was deliberately clear that it was not because of my grandma's health and recovery status. I know this is the case because the day before the staff indicated that grandma would be there for three more weeks and then likely discharged based on the current rate of progression. Then the case manager comes into the room the very next day and assigns a discharge date one week later; two weeks short of the original expectation for full recovery. We transferred my grandma elsewhere as soon as we could. Avoid this place for the betterment of your family and their health.
