My score is mostly based on the customer service I experienced. I am a US-born citizen to Haitian parents, and I was asked to take a friend to the consulate to file for a passport renewal. I checked the website to see what is required. Next, I made a list of the required documentation, per the website instructions. Finally, I called to try and set up an appointment, if possible. I called 3 times throughout the day on Saturday, no one answered the phone, and the voicemail box was full. I called during the week and finally got in contact with someone. I let him know, in creole, I was looking to get a passport renewed. The employee stated briefly what would be needed to renew the passport, and he shares that you have to pay using money order. I questioned the accuracy in his statement, because the website says credit cards are accepted. He said “money orders only thank you goodbye” and he hangs up. 😐. We get two separate money orders, one for the renewal and one for shipping fees because we do not plan on coming back to NYC to pick up a passport. The website states “There is an additional shipping fee (US $15 to $20) to have your passport mailed. The exact shipping cost will depend on the delivery location”. Apparently this is not the case. I smile at everyone when I arrive and speak in creole. I am received well until I meet the woman that will be filing the paperwork. She walks over to the copier directly in front of the waiting area and says, “Why are you here?” I say, “Good morning (insert big smile) we are here for a passport renewal”. My kindness failed.  She says, “Sit in the front, get your documents in place and don't come into my office until you have everything ready for me.” I can't say I'm surprised, just disappointed. The woman never said please or thank you, but she just barks orders. Finally, I asked if we could get the passport mailed. The woman does not look up from her document to respond. She just says, “We don't do that”. I say “But the website says it can be mailed for $15 to $20 dollars based on where you live. I have the money order ready”. She still doesn't look at me and says, “The website is wrong”. I said thank you and we leave the offices. I left there questioning what happened to that woman so early in the morning for her to already be in a bad mood! The actually application process is very quick, but I have listed a few ways the consulate can do to improve the process overall. 1. Have customer service training with employees. The rude behavior is unacceptable. 2. Update the website and ensure accuracy throughout. The website states some things that are clearly false. Examples of the inaccuracies include the possibility of getting your passport shipped, the pricing differences between a child and adult passport renewal, the operating ours and the form of payment accepted. If there are differences between consular sites, it should state those differences. 3. Ensure telephone services and voicemail boxes are available during working hours. 4. Provide electronic documents that can be filled out prior to the visit. This can save time upon arrival. I hope the Haitian consulate can consider these changes. We can do better!

I call today the lady who answer the phone was very rude than she said they are not open On saturdays but the website says different and have the nerve to hang up on me. I love my Haitian people but professionalism is one thing they dont. And probably never will. I will take myself to DC cause they act like that on the phone it will be worst in the office.

Arrived early as a visitor with a party of six, all native-born Haitians. My first impressions... Noticed the staff seemed aloof, stand-offish, distant. Partial to Kreyol with a smattering of French. Not a single smile nor warm engaging manner encountered all morning. Were they fearfully awaiting the arrival of a Papa Doc and trusty tonton? Or an Emmanuel Constant and a remnant of FRAPF? Noticeably absent from walls otherwise all bearing a multiplicity of hooks: any official portrait or photo of Jovenel Moise, or lesser government official. No U.S. flag deferentially complementing the Haitian flag on display. One final irregularity: an amateurish though valiant attempt at restoring an otherwise lovely hand-written parchment copy of the country's declaration of Independence from France. Big Plus: Entire office is surgical-suite clean. Regrettable Minus: the attending staff could learn a thing or two in hospitality from any McDonald's. Overall: If first impressions count, the consulate is long overdue for a makeover.
