Story

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is the largest fine arts museum in Northeast Florida. The Cummer was established in 1958, when art collector, garden enthusiast, and civic leader Ninah M.H. Cummer bequeathed her art collection and riverfront home to create a museum.

Today, the core collection of 60 pieces from Mrs. Cummer's estate has grown to over 5,000 works of art. The 2.5 acres of historic Gardens, set against the St. Johns River, serves as a centerpiece of beauty for all to enjoy. In addition, Art Connections, the Museum's nationally-recognized interactive education center, enhances the cultural learning of more than 165,000 visitors annually.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is committed to engaging and inspiring through the arts, gardens, and education.

First visit to the museum Went for the INK, SILK, GOLD Exhibition. Beautifully done. Stopped at the cafe for lunch, lovely staff and the food was very good for a small cafe. Nice selection. Staff throughout the museum were very friendly and accommodating. Beautiful gift shop, but on the pricey side. Look forward to returning to visit the gardens.

Reasonably sized for a partial day visit. Solid permanent collection. Traveling exhibit on the day I visited included Islamic art and The Royal Dish, rare porcelain. Large interactive section for the kids. Cafe is nice with both inside and outside seating under a large oak tree. One exhibit is from the founders home. Walls, furnishings and art. Portrait of the founders and her husband added a face to her legacy. Museum is located on the site of a family compound group of houses and garden. The three different classic gardens let the visitor see the art in classical garden design.

Had a great time at Cummer Museum. Wonderful Artwork and paintings from different era's. Staff ladies were very friendly. Enjoyed the outside gardens. They do have restrooms and a small cafe area. We ate at the cafe was a bit high for some of the food items on menu but food quality was great. Had a veggie burger. Only thing bout my burger is that my veggie burger was a bit mushy. Fruit salad and tea was fresh and delicious. They never asked if i wanted another tea but they did for my families beers. So for 4 people, 4 entrees and 5 beers and one tea was around $65 Not bad. They have a nice kids interactive area past the cafe.

Would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the rude employees. The exhibits are great, but the customer service level was terrible. I was told at the entrance that photos were not allowed in the Islam exhibit. As we walked through the exhibit, I had a security guard practically accost me to tell not to take photos. No camera or phone in my hand, I'm not sure what her deal was. Then in the kids area, a customer service employee spent 10 minutes chatting with a parent of a kid from the kids camp- while I stood there waiting for help with the printer. Every once in a while she would look over and say " I'll be with you in a minute", and then go right back to chatting. After a while, I guess she got tired of me standing there and she finally helped us. Not impressed.

This is a very beautiful, romantic place to visit. You can view the museum, but also walk outside along the river where there are beautiful gardens and paths. I can't wait till the next time I can go back, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is visiting Jacksonville, or lives around but hasn't come to the Cummer yet.
