Try to get there early in the day to get parking, and to walk around the tower while it is still cool. Bring water. The only facilities are in the main buildings. The kids enjoyed the Junior Ranger program, and the ranger explained the geology of the tower and the significance of the site to the native peoples. The month of June is spiritually important to the native people, so visitors are reminded to be respectful. Bring binoculars if you want to watch people climbing the tower. The size of the tower, and of the basalt columns is hard to grasp until you examine the rocks in the scree field and find the hexagonal (and sometimes 4-, 5-, and 7-sided) chunks of columns.

This monolith starts out as a speck on the horizon then grows to 850'+ above the surrounding countryside. It is huge and an incredible sight that seems out of place. When you get to explore the site (take the one mile trip around the tower) and you'll see the monstrous size of the segments that have lost to time, you then start to understand just how inconsequential humans are to natures true power, which is 'time'. Then when you learn that it was buried under a mile and a half of rock & sediment, it is even harder to grasp/understand just what had to happen to all of the eroded materials, not only here but for as far as you can see. This is cool natural phenomenon, which is truly awesome and is something that you need to experience to fully enjoy.

This unique core of an ancient volcano (or magma intrusion) is an amazing, if out of the way place to visit. You've probably seen this in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind - and it's every bit as alien. The monument itself isn't that big, so you can walk around the base of the tower easily in a few hours. Well run, and a small campground on site. Also a nice KOA right outside the park with great views!

Five stars. The devil made me say that. No, it was good though. Tower is actually impressive, I've seen people climbing it and it looks insane. They have a visitor center with a gift shop and info on the tower. You can hike around it. Has lots of places for great pictures, some designated, some you just see.

Our family was stunned, moved and amazed at this work of art by nature! Truly a humbling experience. Kids loved it. Refreshing stop. We could have spent a day here. Wear good shoes for rocks. Be prepared to discuss with children a light dose of "Native American superstition" -- really more post-modern misunderstood application of ancient American spiritual practices. But a nice place to visit and climb and explore.
