History
Bob Allison, co-owner of Down Home Bar-B-Q has been in the food business since 1971. Back then he bought his first Burger Queen. In 1972, Pat Allison (Bob's wife) started working there and that's how they met. They have owned several Burger Queen and Dairy Queen restaurants over the years in Mount Washington, Fern Creek, Fairdale and other places.
In 2000 they tried to retire but that didn't last long. So in 2002, the first business they opened at this location was the Down Home Cafe. They had a large lunch menu including some BBQ items, a full steam table and plate lunches. Business was good but over time, their large menu was just too much to handle. They rented out the location to several different companies but none stayed open very long.
The Return
In November 2008, they opened Down Home Bar-B-Q with a more manageable all barbeque menu in addition to breakfast. The atmosphere in the Down Home is that of a country store. There are checkered tablecloths, small gift items, rocking chairs on the porch and a table set up where you can always enjoy a game of checkers.
