My experience with Dr. Ruckenstein was excellent. I had a large middle ear tumor which was a very delicate surgery and needed to be performed by the best surgeon. His bedside manor is not overly compassionate but I didn't need him to hold my hand, that is what my family was for, I need him to remove this tumor. I visited both offices in Rador and UPenn and found his staff to be excellent in both locations.Hearing loss is upsetting, and he does truly have empathy he is just not demonstrative in showing it. He and his team have been instrumental in dealing with my insurance company which I am so grateful.

I recommended that my husband see him for an opinion regarding his hearing loss. What a mistake!!!! His responses were terse and frankly rude. What an arrogant man. Certainly does not represent Penn well.

I had similar experiences with Ruckenstein. He was cold, arrogant, didn't listen and didn't order important tests to rule out the causes of my hearing loss. (The new doctor I finally went to ordered them all, including two complex blood tests that HUP couldn't handle - my insurance insisted I go to HUP for blood work.) Ruckenstein said I had no hearing loss and that I tested the same as the year before, but all tests done since leaving him show that my hearing had substantially declined in that period (I took my test results with me). Before changing doctors I called the nurses in Ruckenstein's office to switch doctors and stay at HUP, but they wouldn't let me. I told them I wanted to see Dr. Bigelow, but was told both doctors had the same credentials. I said again that I wanted to change to Bigelow, but was put on hold so many times, and for great lengths of time, that I finally hung up and haven't looked back since. I lost three months with Ruckenstein and was also unhappy with the audiology department, except for the last person I saw (a friendly woman who wore many well-deserved pins for her great service). My biggest disappointment in Ruckenstein's audiology department is a woman who handles the hearing aids. I strongly recommend she get some serious empathy training. Fortunately I have now found a fabulous doctor at Drexel/Hahnemann who is what a doctor should be - caring, empathetic and brilliant.

Dr. Ruckenstein is great. He was personable and made me feel that he could really help me which he did. Diagnosed my Meniere's disease right away after I wasted months going to another ENT having horrible vertigo attacks which that doctor couldn't figure out why. Dr. Ruckenstein took the simplest step first and so far that has cured me of my horrible vertigo. I do have permanent hearing loss but since seeing Dr. Ruckenstein and getting the right medication the decline has stopped and he keeps an eye on it with yearly checkups.
