Story

Ellenberger Park (est. 1909) is located in Historical Irvington on the eastside of Indianapolis. Master landscape architect and urban planner George Edward Kessler added a specific facet to Irvington with his construction of his boulevard along Pleasant Run and development of Ellenberger Park in the early 1900's. In 1930 a pool was opened on the site of Ellenberger Park's current swimming pool and in 1962 an ice rink was installed.

Used to be as great park, but a younger generation seems to have started hanging out, often in groups, all around the park & trails. I had my son at the pool last summer, after moving back from South Carolina, & noticed a couple of 19/20 yr olds arguing out by the cars, at the end of the pool area. Next thing I know the crowd scattered, a few people screamed & then heard gun shots. I was truly shocked but also saddened to the thought of what could have been...I still walk the trails & take my son to the park, but always a little more aware & on guard, when I feel like I shouldn't have to be.

I was there for the farmers market. It's far more than you'd think based on the name. It's a bit more like a miniature festival, live music, foods that are ready to eat and a large selection of crafts for sale. If you want actual farmers' items, they're up by the road, it's a bit uphill from the main festivities.

I use this park all of the time because it is by my house. The parks department does less than the minimum. Terrible drainage problems with lots of standing water for mosquitos. Trees are not deadwooded. Lots of dead timber. Not much grass in the grass. Nice tennis courts with lighting, nice playgrounds, ice skating ring, pool.

Love this park, there are 2 play grounds. One by the pool is set up for older kids, but they have a cool new baby swing. The play area to the south is set up for younger kids to climb around. Very nice, we'll cared for.

It's a decent park! Could be upgraded some! But it's doable!
