When you go to Elsa's on Far Hills you see this giant ornate building and it really pulls you in. I've driven by several times and thought it looks like "the" place to get authentic Mexican cuisine. Unfortunately, my experience was nowhere near amazing. My family and I entered through the west side of the building which apparently is the bar. To the left was some girl in an Elsas shirt that blankly stared at us. In front of us was a bartender serving about 15 people and to the right were booths and tables. We just grabbed a booth because no one even acknowledged us. There were maybe 4 other booths or tables occupied. It took the waitress awhile to acknowledge us. Honestly, it seemed like everyone working there could care less that we were there. I got a really weird vibe from most of the people there. As for the food, the chips and salsa are self serve. Basically, you scoop your own chips from a community warmer. When you put up barriers for COVID but then you encourage everyone to serve themselves their own chips and salsa and/or popcorn; it really doesn't make much sense at all. We got the question Loco pictured for our chips. The cheese was runny and honestly lacked flavor. The loco part was that they added chorizo but it was barely noticeable. My wife got the fajita bowl. It was a pretty large portion and she stated she did like it. My daughter got chicken chunks and fries. They were basic and nothing to write about. I got the Chicken Chimichanga dinner. I get the chimichanga dinner at every Mexican restaurant that I visit so that I can compare them. Elsa's chimichanga dinner is by far the worst I've ever had. The refried beans had no flavor. It was a bean paste. The Mexican rice was white rice with crushed tomatoes and seasonings. The chimichanga was doughy. By doughy, I mean it was absolutely undercooked. As for the chicken, have you ever tried canned chicken? Canned chicken has a certain flavor and texture. The chicken in this chimichanga reminded me exactly of canned chicken. With 20% tip we spent a little north of $50 for 2 adults and a kid. In the car, my Daughter asked to never go back. Honestly, I think this place is really just a bar serving food to people who are too drunk to really care. They do say they are known for their margaritas. So, if you want a decent margarita and all you can eat tortilla chips then this is your place. Features: They did have plexi glass dividers on the booths.
The salsa reminded me of pace picanti. The rice was like a glorified rice a roni. The chicken felt like it was a precook heated up. They didn't have corn tortillas. It was good white people mexican food. Everyone in the restaurant was white... that should say a lot for a Mexican restaurant. This place is not authentic. It was okay... very Americanized. The staff was very friendly and I liked the atmosphere.
Food tastes great and service was amazing! We were there on a Saturday night and the bar was not busy at all.
If I could give zero stars, I would. Went here for lunch with my aunt and uncle after getting our hair done. First read flag, walked in, was not greeted by staff as everyone at the bar stared at us. We didn't see or hear anyone to seat us, so we seated ourselves in the only open booth by the bar area. There was about 4 or 5 other booths and tables taken, and another 4 dirty tables that no one had attended to. Waited about 15 minutes, no acknowledged from any staff yet. We see people kept walking up to serve their own chips and salsa, which I find odd. Not very sanitary and they were Definitely not fresh. My aunt said the salsa tasted like ketchup. Waitress finally greeted us, took drink orders, I ordered a strawberry margarita and I swear it was the smallest I'd ever seen. Once our food had come, it was an utter disappointment, the rice had zero flavor and almost consistency of baby food, I ate one fork full and was all I could stomach. The chicken fajitas weren't bad, I have definitely had better, but only got 5 pieces of chicken, which I had to cut up into small pieces to fill in my tortilla. My aunt got a soft taco that was dripping with grease and the soft taco was hard from being so dry or old. Overall food was just gross, I would have had better food at McDonald's down the street and way cheaper at that. I will say, I did have a good experience at elsas in Xenia, so not sure if its a location issue or what, but avoid this place. Also, I found it odd that no Mexicans worked here or making the food.
A pretty darn cool looking place, a great lunch buffet too! My server was one of the friendliest I've ever hadFood: 4/5
I was a plus one to a small gathering so there were about a dozen of us. This is the fourth Elsa's I've been to and just like the others, it was exceptional with food and not to mention those Bad Juan's! I got the steak fajita nachos which were superb. The only minor thing would be that the waitress was gone more often than not, there were a lot of empty glasses, chips etc. But it would be understandable if she had multiple sections. Otherwise fantastic atmosphere and friendly service.
AVOID THIS LOCATION. Ordered and was brought something completely different from what was ordered. Asked for sweet tea with lime. They brought the sweet tea with lemon. Was told that this Mexican restaurant does not have lime. What Mexican restaurant does not have lime? The salsa literally tasted like ketchup. No diced vegetables at all. The location was dingy. The floor was sticky as was the table and booth. When they brought our food which was NOT what we ordered we got up and left.
Food was delicious. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Will be back.Food: 5/5
Elsa's has sadly gone downhill. Ordered a burrito dinner & everything tasted like it was microwaved & the refried beans tasted like they came out of a jar, terrible! Nothing tasted freshly made. My partner was even disappointed in the Bad Juan. Quality & taste not what it used to be. Will not be going back to any of their locations.Food: 2/5
This place simply doesn’t deserve one star. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. My family and I love trying other Mexican restaurants we own a small one and this has been the worst one yet. This is not Mexican cuisine by any means. I ordered the Combination: one beef taco that i asked for soft got a hard taco, one chicken enchilada the chicken had an odd taste and the sauce was half decent, the beans are most definitely from a can and the “Mexican Rice” was soggy and chewy, no flavor and I couldn’t even get one bite in before spitting it out. My cousin ordered the Combination: beef taco we would both agree we would rather have taco bell tacos, a chorizo enchilada she didn’t even have two bites, the beans and cilantro lime rice which was dry but more edible than the mexican rice. They ran out of salsa which comes in tiny cups and is self serve, so we ordered Loco Queso — queso with chorizo. Needless to say we received chorizo with a splash of queso. We didn’t eat more than a couple chips with this. The overall environment is horrendous. it looks like a run down dive bar. The only good thing about this place was the music not mexican, more punk rock which is our style. We will never be back. I hope you read this review and do not waste your time or money on this place.
