Story

Birds and Exotics Animal Care is South Carolina’s premiere avian and exotic specialty practice. Dr. Biascoechea, board-certified in avian medicine, and Dr. Rainwater treat all types of birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish. We also accept referral cases from veterinarians throughout the state and surrounding areas.

Hours of Operation:
Mon-Thur 8am-6pm, Fri 8am-5pm, and every other Saturday 9am-1pm. Go to http://birdsandexotics.com/contact/#saturdays for a list of Saturdays we are open.

Regular wellness exams are vital to monitor and maintain your pet's health. We recommend a postpurchase consultation as soon as possible after bringing a new pet into the home so that we can ensure that you are providing your new family member with the proper diet, care, and habitat.

Often, owners wait until there is a visible issue of concern before bringing their pet for a checkup. Avian and exotic pets are innately skilled at hiding any signs of illness or weakness until they have depleted their bodies' resources and are gravely ill. Regular wellness exams allow us to note any change in weight, behavior or condition and to correct problems before they become life-threatening. Regular bloodwork, radiographs and other diagnostics allow us to monitor the internal organs to ensure that they are functioning properly and to detect illness well before external symptoms manifest.

In addition to annual and 6-month physical exams, we offer behavioral consultation for pets that are having issues such as screaming, biting, or aggressive, defensive or antisocial behaviors. We offer prepurchase consultations to ensure that you are selecting the right kind of pet for you, your family, and your situation.

Against my wishes, my wife took our skinny pig here over a year ago shortly after we got her because she insisted that she needed a checkup. They had never heard a guinea pig cough, they recommended a hysterectomy to prevent cervical cancer and stating that there was a 50/50 chance that she would die on the operating table, she left with gunk in her eyes, and losing hair off of her nose. Now-a-days, when she starts actin' up, all we have to do is ask her if she wants us to take her back to the vet in Mount Pleasant, and she straightens up real quick. We're hoping that there is another vet (closer to North Charleston) that we can take her to, and hoping it is better and a better experience. :-\

Wonderful staff. They’ve saved my Duncan bunny from stasis, and have preformed life saving surgeries for my fur-babies. They are always very professional and comforting in the process. They really know what they’re doing and I always recommend them to any friends or acquaintances that have rabbits or other Exotics.

I've been bringing my rescued house rabbits to Exotic Vet Care for over 8 + years now, and I absolutely LOVE the staff and most importantly both Dr.Biascoechea and Dr.Rainwater are very rabbit savvy exotic vets! They go the extra mile to get to the bottom of any illness and educate their patients on proper care of their exotic pets. They've literally saved my rabbits lives since I tend to adopt health compromised rabbits that no one else wants. An added plus is they actually care about your pets, they've treated mine like the special little individuals that they are! :)

Took my bird in for a beak trim and instead Dr. Rainwater reshaped the beak which she did not need the sides of her beak reshaped. That is not what I asked for. My bird needed the upper and lower beak trimmed to help her eat without pain. I was told to have my bird fast to put her under anesthesia for the beak trim. Then when I arrived, they required an exam so I agreed because they insisted in order to get the bird's beak trimmed. Then when we were in the exam room, I was told by Dr. Rainwater she was not comfortable putting the bird under anesthesia. Should have ran when they required an exam just to trim the bird's beak and changed the plans on me initially. This doctor appears young and inexperienced. I see other people have had problems with this doctor. I went to a different Vet. It cost me $25 for a beak trim and this Vet did the job. DON'T USE THEM. They are just a bunch of thieves.

If I could give them no stars I would. A little over a month ago I took my bird Reganold here. After having him for 8 years we recently discovered he is actually a female because "he" started laying eggs. I was referred to him by a couple vets offices because he is the only avian specialist in Charleston for hormone therapy. Thinking that he was in the best hands I quickly found out that all this office cared about was money. They quickly added on everything they could instead of putting Reganolds best interests in mind. His leg was broken by the doctor in the process. He admitted to me that it did happen in his care and during the first visit I was charged almost $500 for everything. Then came back for something that happened in their care and was charged another $460. What really got me is that I was told by the receptionist that she hopes I will still refer customers to them because I work in the pet industry.... she would hate for something like this to deter me. I understand mistakes happen but the treatment that I received from them overall with my family member was painful. Their lack of sympathy was absolutely ridiculous. Not knowing whether he was going to survive due to the amount of pressure on the other leg was devastating.... luckily after a lot of research I found another vet who was willing to help me with him and he has been recovering well. Like I said before I understand mistakes happen but if I can stop another family from going through the pain I did with this review then hopefully I have helped in someway or another.
