Chef and owner, Christine Ondrus-Lykos is first generation Hungarian/American. She was born and raised in Queens, New York and grew up in the kitchen surrounded by Hungarian and Romanian food. Her Romanian grandmother, Irma, was her biggest influence in the kitchen. She watched her grandmother make phyllo dough from scratch, stretching it over the table to make strudel. Irma was self-taught and had dreamed of opening her own bakery using the equipment her husband built for her. When Irma’s husband passed away unexpectedly everything changed. As fate would have it she became head baker at a bakery in Minnesota for 14 years, at least doing what she loved. Christine’s Hungarian mother, Margit, also created incredible dishes for the family. “My mother is an excellent cook and always demanded that fresh, quality ingredients be used in her cooking.” Christine’s Italian step-father, Paul, introduced the family to classic dishes like Marinara, Ragu and Pizza.
Christine’s experience includes three years managing a pizzeria in New York City and five years in Greece studying the foods of the Mediterranean and cake decorating.
She moved to California in 2012 to live with her mother in Placerville. Baking and cooking is her first love, so when she saw she could rent some time in a commercial kitchen, the inspiration for Farmer’s Delicatessen was born. The menu represents not only the food she grew up with but the food she loves to eat. It’s that simple. And hopefully you will enjoy it as much as she does.
