Story

Plantation Number 4 (now Charlestown, NH) was the northernmost and westernmost township within the British Colonies here in North America from 1735 until 1761. Due to its location at the edge of the woods, and its townspeople, Number 4 held a distinctive position in the Colonies, and had an unusual relationship with Amerindians people of the Connecticut River Valley.

Today, the Fort at No. 4 attempts to bring to life the story of the conflicts, trials, clash and co-mingling of cultures because "[w]e understand now, (...) embrace the understanding... that who we are *is* who we were".

The Fort at No. 4 is and independent, open air museum. That is, the museum does not receive State or Federal support. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit as well as 509(a)2 charitable entity.

Open seasonally May through the first weekend of November with special off season activities, the museum attempts to engage visitors with living history events, educational tours, workshops, lectures, and static displays.

This is a simple, down to earth museum, but educational. Battle reenactments are well planned, rehearsed, and narrated well. Interpreters are well informed about what they are doing. Activities to be seen include fireplace cooking, camping as soldiers would have done it, trading, bookbinding, etc. The village baker has a lot of information. Some weekends include more activity than others, but something is always happening. Abenaki weekends and Native Heritage events are particularly well presented. Admission is reasonable. Events are listed on the website.

Took 2 great grandsons for reenactment. It was wonderful and very well done. All enjoyed, but glad we brought chairs with us. Lot of walking at this museum but worth the effort to talk to local folks who man the fort.

We went to the Harvest Supper which is a fund raiser for repairs needed at the Fort. The volunteers were dressed in period costumes. And were gracious & informative. A small reception was set up prior to the dinner and included lively music by 2 musicians playing several different instruments. We enjoyed it and had a good time. We hope to do it again next year.

Great look back in time. Reenactments are fun for everyone. You can smell and hear the muskets a mile away. The volunteers are great "actors". Uniforms are authentic looking. Can't miss this one.

This a wonderful open air museum exhibiting 18th century life in New Hampshire. The replica fort has exhibits demonstrating everyday life, including cooking and homemaking, blacksmithing, textile arts, trading, and they have occasional mock battles as well.
