I rented a storage unit at Fort Knox Self Storage from December 2012 through June 2013. I chose Fort Knox primarily because of its location. (The Middletown site is within walking distance of where I live.) I didn't do any research beyond that, and now I regret my decision. I am writing this so you can avoid making the same mistake.

I visited the office in person to find out what was available. I was told that there was a unit of the size I needed, but the rent was more than I was hoping to pay. I said that I wanted to shop around to see if I could save some money, and I got up to leave. Before I reached the door, the office manager hastily made me an offer that was within my budget, so I sat back down and signed a lease. What she didn't tell me was that this was a temporary, introductory offer. After I moved my belongings into the unit, I received a letter notifying me that the rate I had been promised when I signed the lease was no longer applicable, and I would be charged the rate that was originally quoted. I paid the higher rate until I was able to make other arrangements.

When I returned to Fort Knox to move my stuff out, the roof had leaked, and there was an inch of water in one corner of the unit. (This was particularly alarming, considering that my unit was next to a unit identified as the "Breaker Room".) After I removed my property, I notified the office staff of the situation. There was no apology for my inconvenience. There was no expression of concern for the condition of my belongings.

As if that wasn't bad enough, I didn't even get my security deposit back. I discovered the leak on the 5th of the month, and my rent was due on the 1st, so I was charged for the entire month. (If you move in in the middle of a month, they pro-rate your rent accordingly, but apparently they can't perform the same calculation if you move out in the middle of a month.) As I write this, I am paying for a storage unit which is empty, except for a puddle of water on the floor.

If you are looking for a secure place to store items that aren't waterproof, keep looking. If you are looking for a place to start a mushroom farm, I recommend unit L12.
