I came to see Dr Woods my gums where in a mess. I was really nervous and she was very friendly and kind. The treatment was fully explained and I was very happy with the care I received. Sadly Dr Woods passed away earlier in this year but the staff and new Dr, Dr Lim are just as friendly, kind and continue to provide excellent service. I highly recommend and continue to use this excellent periodontist.

Some years ago, my regular dentist recommended that I consult with an oral surgeon to get gum grafts. Just to let you know, I have some of the worst teeth and gums in the history of mankind – my mouth is actually so terrifying that at one point in my life, a young hygienist ended up quitting the profession and moving back to Minnesota after having to clean my teeth a couple of times. Anyway, I eventually did proceed with going to the oral surgeon my dentist recommended and had a number of gum grafts done. It was not a pleasant experience and I was in quite a bit of pain both during the procedure and afterwards. Fast forward a few years later, and my recession had worsened in spots, so once again, my regular dentist advised more gum grafts. Due to my prior experience, I was extremely reluctant but when he persisted, I asked if he had another oral surgeon that he could recommend. In addition to the surgeon who had previously done work on me, he also gave me the contact information for Dr. Gayle Wood. Again, with much trepidation, I booked an appointment with Dr. Wood. I’ll be honest with you – apropos to nothing – Dr. Wood is an attractive woman – which initially put me off for some reason – maybe more insecurity on my part than anything else – but after a few visits, her professionalism and obvious competence completely won me over. It became very clear in talking to her that she researches and keeps up with her field; she gives talks and presentations to her fellow doctors and dentists, and is clearly invested and passionate about her work. And once I was able to get past her appearance, I found her to be very warm, very funny, very human – qualities which I have learned over the years that you certainly can’t take for granted when choosing any kind of healthcare provider. I had two major gum graft procedures performed by Dr. Wood over the span of two or three years, and although it would probably be inaccurate to describe any kind of dental surgery as “painless,” the discomfort during and after my procedures was extremely minimal. For the second round of grafts, I didn’t even bother taking any pain medication afterwards – although Dr. Wood later gently advised me that I should have (and that directive was definitely included in her pre-procedure material) – in order to reduce post-procedure inflammation. Which turned out to be practically non-existent, anyway. Along with her surgical skill, Dr. Wood is also very knowledgeable about all areas of dental care. Because of the horrendous condition of my mouth, I have my teeth cleaned every four months instead of the standard six, and have made a conscious effort to be more diligent in my brushing and flossing regimen. And although my regular hygienists always assure me that I’m doing a good job in my cleaning efforts, on more than a couple of occasions, Dr. Wood has been blunt – and conscientious enough – to point out areas that I was missing and give me suggestions on how I could improve my brushing and flossing technique. In addition, Dr. Wood’s staff is uniformly excellent; I have a medical “flex” spending program through my employment, and at one point, a member of her staff, Jessica, proactively calculated my benefit, deductible, remaining flex balance, etc., and worked out an arrangement that would enable me to get some work done before the end of the year. Dr. Wood’s staff was always friendly, courteous and most importantly, well-prepared whenever I visited their office. Obviously I wouldn’t wish recession or any kind of gum pathology on anyone, but if through neglect or genetics or some other unfortunate circumstance, you find yourself in the lamentable situation of requiring an oral surgeon or periodontist, I would highly recommend Dr. Wood and her staff.

what to expect with dr wood: 1. high prices - possibly the most expensive in the south bay. they only discuss prices after you pay $150 for an exam. of the 3 periodontists who have performed oral surgery work, dr wood is the most expensive. 2. old technology - i was happy to find another south bay periodontist using CBCT scanner for improved precision and pezosurgery device reducing bone trauma. 3. deficient periodontal work - that same periodontist, found a giant hole in a bone graft performed by dr wood. that periodontist successfully performed a replacement bone graft. because her bone graft was unsuccessful, dr wood, refunded her bone graft charges. that said, i can never get back the 4 months wasted, wearing a mouth plate and waiting for her failed bone graft to heal 4. poor communication - 1 emails + 2 voicemails, asking when to set my follow-up appt., went unanswered for a month. i needed next step in implant surgery completed. i never heard back from dr wood until i wrote her a termination letter; at that time, she said. personal problems caused her neglect. 5. unfair billing practice - on my 5th visit in december 2016, i was presented a $200 invoice for work performed in 2013. this was the first i had heard of money due. the staff blamed the billing software. dr wood said, "if you receive a bill, the work is presumed to have been performed for which you need to pay". attempting to collect a bill for the 1st time, 3 years after date of service, seems unfair to me. making it worse, i lived about 4 blocks from their office and 2 blocks from dr wood but never heard about this invoice for 3 years. even then, it took 5 visits before anyone said anything the other south bay periodontist referenced in this post is dr carmen ramos who is best periodontist i have encountered
