Story

The Gilley's Lunch cart was built in 1940 by the Worcester Diner Co. of Worcester, MA. This diner is one, of just five that were built, and is the only one remaining in full operation today.

This diner, and its predecessor, were hauled into Market Square each evening and parked in front of the North Church in preparation for the evening's business. Originally the diner was towed by horse, then tractor and finally by truck. The mural behind Gilley's, recently painted by John Perry, depicts Gilley's in the 1900's in Market Square. Gilley's was moved to its present Fleet Street location in June 1974.

Although permanently situated, Gilley's retains the same characteristics and authenticity as when it was mobile. The truck that towed the diner is still attached to the front of the structure and the wheels remain under the skirting. The interior contains the original oak, porcelain trim and fixtures. Every effort is made to retain the original charm and character of this historic diner.

Gilley's is named after longtime employee Ralph "Gilley" Gilbert. Gilley served dogs and burgers from the diner's tiny kitchen for over five decades. An icon in Portsmouth history, Gilley was known for his flawless memory, kindness, and generosity.

He greeted his customers by name, had a good word for everyone, and never let the lack of funds prevent a hungry customer from eating. Gilley died in 1986 but his name and fame continues.

The wing added to Gilley's in May 1996 combined the diner with its former separate storage trailer. The additional storage and refrigeration facilities enabled Gilley's to expand its menu, improve safety, security, and provide better service to you, our customer.

Gilley's diner has great tasteful food. But we had 2 bad experiences with the blond woman who works there. We have brought scouts there for the past 8 years. The scouts who we bring are not rich, but are well manner, behave and respectful were treated very poorly by this woman. This year on 2 different occasions. If she thinks she is funny she is not. She was rude, disrespectful to the scouts and to the adult leaders who brought these scouts to visit this establishment. When she made a mistake on the order she blamed the kids. This time she spoke rudely at them for leaving her a not a big enough tip, for not being fast enough in ordering. Her comments were so disrespectful, and insulting. When we came there one time a man was working and he was great. The food is very good, the man working was great. But this woman to rude for me to want to take the kids back especially when you are showing the city of Portsmouth and the wonderful history of Portsmouth.

A legendary staple of Portsmouth food... turned into an idealized trap. While the renovations certainly improved the cleanliness, for some reason they decided to raise prices while lowering portion sizes and quality. Gilley's used to be the go-to place for anyone out late, or kids on a budget just getting out of school. However, for what you get at Gilley's as of the last time I went, you might as well take the drive over to 5 Guys where you get twice the portion size for the same price. I might stop by again some time in the next few months to give them another shot, but needless to say I'm a bit disenchanted after coming home from college and seeing another small piece of Portsmouth 'adjusted' to fit the city's zeitgeist.

The place is always packed late at night, and you're bound to find a whole cast of characters who will ramp your evening up to eleven with all kinds of local flavor. One time I found a hardly-eaten plate of poutine in the trash, which was also awesome.
