Story

Grandview Cemetery is a remarkable tribute to the history of Johnstown.

Named for its "grand view" of the city, the surrounding mountains and the scenic Conemaugh Valley, Grandview reflects the restless and tumultuous course of a city that, over the years, has heralded its triumph over adversity, its triumph of the human spirit.

Grandview was created in 1885 by Johnstown leaders, who in the light of the tragic path of history, appear now to have been preordained to fulfill a vital mission for their city's future.

While much attention centers on the tragedy of the Great 1889 Johnstown Flood, Grandview represents more – the overall history of the area, encompassing a century that covers the war years and the floods of 1936 and 1977. Artistic monuments and markers symbolize their time in the course of events, representing the day-by-day events that were to mold the Johnstown today.

My great grand father purchased the family plot on the 14th of April 1893. As far as I am able to find out, there are 3 generations of the gates family interred there. The grounds of Grandview are immaculate. A perfect place to spend eternity.

Family is "there". Well maintained, generally a quiet place to reflect on life, family.

Clean and well maintained. A visit to the flood memorial was a reminder to me that we are all here for a finite time. But this memorial was worth visiting to see thatpeople care.
