Great Salt Plains claims to be the world’s only location where people can freely dig and mine for selenite crystals. We gave it a try but couldn’t figure out what the big deal was. We found a dozen or so, but they were small and dirty. Just seeing the place was great – the size of the Salt Plains was unbelievable.

This is a great park to visit with kids. We took a 3 year old and an 18 month olds and they had a blast digging for crystals and playing in the sand. The crystals were very ready to find and we very quickly had a large pile of them. We had the place to ourselves and I was shocked that there weren't more people taking advantage of this unique state park. The few staff members we encountered were very helpful, but the visitor's center was small and only had one bathroom.

No Charge for park entrance- So enjoyed our day at the State park. Several different locations for all the different activities. We dug for crystals - what a learning experience. If you plan on doing that activity plan on a couple hours - bring a shovel, comfort clothes, plenty of drinking water, snacks, sun hat and strong sun block. Water to rinse off and towels. Check blogs on line to help find crystals - "How To" It was extremely windy and sunny the day we went! Rinse your vehicle after leaving to remove Salt film. Walked at the dam. Views were so beautiful. At Park -Nice play grounds. Camp sites. Then headed to Sandy Beach for a little dip. Great family park. One day or one week - so worth the drive! GREAT DAY! A few fast food places nearby and a grocery store in Cherokee.

The area appears very well maintained for a state park in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. The lake is cool and the nearby salt plains are very interesting to see. The camping sites look fairly good too.
