Local Syracuse grocery store for over 82 years
The Green Hills Tradition began in the early 1930’s when Carrie Hawkins opened a roadside farm stand on Route 80 in South Onondaga. Although the primary family business was dairy farming, they also raised sweet corn. Carrie sold the sweet corn, along with the extra vegetables from her garden, at the stand.
The farm stand did so well that when Route 11 (S. Salina St.) was opened as the major route going south, the stand was moved to the stores present location to take advantage of the traffic. The stand was still a sideline to the primary dairy business until 1948 when the large dairy barn burned down. Clifford (Carrie’s son) decided to get out of the dairy business and expand the farm stand into a year round operation.
In the 1950’s Clifford’s son, Keith, joined the business and began expanding the store, one section at a time, to its current size. In the process, Green Hills became a full service supermarket while maintaining its focus on the community, fresh foods and produce that are its history. Green Hills has employed generations of local families over the years and this contributes to its reputation for friendliness and strong customer focus.
Today Green Hills continues to work hand and hand with the community while providing high quality meat, seafood, local produce and let’s not forget those delicious doughnuts from our scratch bakery.
