I wasn't the customer on this visit, my daughter-in-law was. She's a health and wellness person and a 2 decades long vegetarian. I've been to Gumbo Girl before (wonderful fish tacos!) and knew she'd appreciate the place. She did. She ordered the house sauteed cabbage and shrimp tacos and loved it all.

Jackson is a sad place for gumbo if this is the best in the city. My daughters couldn't get past the imitation crab meat. We paid extra for blue crab but were questioned about whether we would eat it, like we didn't know what we were ordering. To further insult us, when we inquired about a plate that hadn't been served more than 10 minutes after the others, the server "explained" that it is a sit-down restaurant, as if I wasn't familiar with the concept. The manager further explained that they cook as people order. There is no gumbo I want that can be cooked while people wait. Then the contradiction came. The turkey was cooked that morning, but she was cooking the potatoes we were waiting on. She also told me I don't own a restaurant, so I don't know how it works. Well I have eaten in 100s, so I do know that better restaurants time the serving of food so the party eats a hot meal together. 
At least the potatoes were good. They were steamed potatoes with garlic butter and parsley. We ordered two more servings...that didn't take 30 minutes to receive. So if you go, skip the gumbo and get the homestyle turkey necks with potatoes and cabbage. There wasn't a bit of cabbage left on any plate, either.

Nice intimate vibe. Gumbo was the best I've had. My only complaint is that I don't live close enough to Jackson to eat there often. Portions were enough to eat 2 days.

A hole in the wall place. Inside, it's clean and cozy as well as laid back. I loved the music they played. My boyfriend and I ordered the surf and turf burger as well as the breakfast burger. Both were great, just wished the entrée and side came warmer than it did..other than that, this place I do recommend!

Very good gumbo. Relaxed atmospjere and service is awesome.  They have a variety  of menu options. Try the turkey neck pot and turtle brownies.
