We went to Guy-Kanu Japanese BBQ at the Torrance location to celebrate a birthday. We were a large group of 15 plus a toddler. Restaurant is small and the floor was greasy. For a large group, only one waitress was assigned to our table. Service was extremely slow and unorganized. She never checked on our table and we had to flag her down to place our orders. Some of our orders such as corn cheese, cheese fondue, spicy cabbage salad, dumplings were never placed on our table. Meat plates were small and some only had fats with no meats. The beef Sukiyaki Bibimbap was a bowl of rice with teriyaki sauce, no vegetables and hardly any beef in the bowl. Spinach was swimming in garlic butter. Egg soup tasted like watered down Chinese soup. Steamed edamame had sprinkles of salt. In fact, everything they served was salted heavy handed that some of us hardly drink soda had to quench our thirst with coke soda. Most of their beef plates were of low quality as meats were chewy. We were disappointed at the meal pace as it was difficult to place our order as it was difficult to locate our server. At times, we didn’t have any meats to grill. Our grills were not changed out as they should. Food lacked of quality consistency. They were understaffed as the waiter had to take orders, delivered food and bused tables. Poor management at this location. We will not come back to this location and probably to this chain restaurant.
Update: I've come a few more times since my last review and lately the quality and value have dropped somewhat. The AYCE menus have increased in price which is understandable but they also moved some of our favorite options to the more expensive menus. I used to be able to dine with my wife for around $60-65/each with tax and tip but its now closer to $85+. The quality of the meats seem to have slipped somewhat but perhaps I was just unlucky with the cuts we received. I was hoping that paying higher prices was going to result in better quality but that has not been the case. The bathrooms are still not great and the dining room seems to be less clean as well. I'll give this place another shot or two but due to the cost it might be awhile considering other options in this price range. Original Review: Great Japanese BBQ spot. You pick out your meats and they bring them out for you to grill at your table. The flavors and quality are solid and happy hour prices on beer and saki are great. Service could be a little bit more quick and we have had dirty utensils cooking tongs that we had to send back for replacement but otherwise we really enjoy this spot over and over. One thing that is really concerning is that the bathrooms are a complete disaster. Filthy floors 5 minutes after restaurant had opened, sink and wall urinal separated from the wall, peeling caulk and water damage. One wonders if this is how the restaurant cleans what the customer can see, what are they doing behind the scenes where we can't see... I still eat here but if I get sick I won't have anyone to blame but myself.
Service was acceptable. Staff was friendly and they brought our drink and food quickly. However, they did not refill our hot tea even once. No change of grill neither. Meat was of good quality. Can't speak the same for the miso soup, it was very diluted and had no taste at all.Food: 4/5
Sooo good. The garlic edamame was not as good as I would have liked...but otherwise the food is amazing! Service was great...checked on us the perfect amount of times. Make reservations during happy hour if you can...prices were great!Food: 5/5
My son and I both ordered All you can eat. My son's order was $45, but I got a great discount for over 60 for $29.50, so I felt like I was getting a good deal.Food: 4/5
Came here during Dine LA where they had a $45/pp deal for a choice of appetizer, two meats, a premium meat, dessert, and rice + miso soup. We had a reservation for 7:15pm but they seated us 10 minutes past our slot. Indoor dining only no outdoor options. Free parking lot. Credit cards accepted. Most of the seating appeared to be for groups of two or four. Family-friendly. The meat portions are smaller but good quality. I really liked the poke nachos I had too they were in a sweet sauce. The ceviche had a nice tang too. The spicy pork did have a kick to it. You have a variety of sauces including a spicy one, soy sauce, and yuzu. There was a helpful paper guide on the wall that showed recommended cook times for the meats. For dessert, they were out of the matcha ice cream but we got the s’mores come in 2. The chocolate provided is just two pieces of Hershey chunks so you’ll get a more marshmallow-heavy s’more.
Celebrated my birthday here and had a great time. Food was excellent, mostly ordered appetizers for some reason. Gyoza with chili sauce, Gyu Kaku salad, egg rolls, salmon salad, BBQ shrimp, bacon and broccoli were all delicious. If you go before 5:00 the appetizers are 1/2 off which helps when you have 2 teenage boys who are always hungry. Get a reservation, it’s really hard to get in otherwise.
Meats are good, but serving is not generous enough for the price of $150 + Tax for 4 pax. We ordered "Yakiniku Set." Staff were nice and helpful enough, Dining is clean.
Not worth the hype. I believe it's busy quite often due to the lack of japanese BBQs in the area. The hype about seeing your meat being cooked in front of you seems to be why people go here. The food was pretty bland, always having to add something to it. Drinks were okay, I would suggest somewhere else if you're dying to try japanese bbq and if you are considering going make your reservation at least 3 days prior. The spicy cucumber were the only things that kicked with flavor.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Hokkaido dinner $95, feeds two people. Service was quick and very attentive. We had two grill changes which means our meat was constantly being grilled very cleanly. Highly recommend coming here, it never disappoints. You MUST listen to their grilling suggestions because they know the perfect amount of time to grill everything. If they don’t say anything, then ask about it. If you overcook your food then that’s ultimately your fault!
