Southern Chinese street food that brings me home. The rice rolls are super thick and filled with spam ? and the toasted sesame seeds on the outside provide a great crunch. The tofu is layered with many sauces, some of which I could not identify, but one smelled fishy/stinky. A new experience, but the overall flavor was light enough that I enjoyed it.
If you are looking for a snack or a cheap meal, this is the place. Service is so friendly and the food is pretty good. The dumplings cost $4 for 3 pieces which seems pricey for Chinatown, but they are huge. The dough tasted homemade and it's filled with so much meat. The rice crepe roll cost $2.50 and it's so heavy! It's firmer than the other places and it's filled with pork and scallions. This roll can certainly fill you up!
Very cute little spot. The guy working there was super nice and friendly! The food is good - very peculiar flavor as this place serves Hakka cuisine - and very cheap! Great for a quick and filling snack. Might also be meal size for some people. Recommended to try!
Generous portions and freshly made in front of you. If you're used to more traditional Asian flavors including fermented flavors, this will remind you of home. If you're more used to western flavors, it may taste weird. Everyone should like the dumplings though.
Was so happy to learn that someone was able to bring back my childhood comfort foods, Nam Fung rice rolls and tofu. And it's even better than I remembered it to be. I'm so impressed with Hak Box keeping the quality, taste, and texture so good and consistent. The owner is also very nice! He waited for us when we couldn't get there in time before closing and that means so much to me and my cravings!
Yummy Hakka snack food with small menu and a few stools for seating. The menu is simple but the food is authentic- cash only. Also, this is located on the other side of the Broadway mall. It’s a bit confusing at first to find it so if you walk to the other side near the bridge it’s right in front of you. Recommend the rice roll and dumplings- both are filling enough for lunch. Not for vegetarians or vegans / the tofu dish has meat and it can be taken out if you’re not picky about the overlap of the meat sauce.
Hak Box is a. tiny Chinatown eatery serving up Hakka-styled quick eats combined in some familiar forms. be ready to grab-n-go here as this is a takeout restaurant only. super small interior with an order counter. i got two Hak rolls for lunch. the Hak rolls are dense rice rolls filled with dried shrimp, sauce, minced pork ? i think and more. the Hak rolls are shaped like mini burritos and pretty ample in size. i really like the flavors in the Hak roll and the chewy texture is satisfying as carb-y eat. there are a couple of items served here like dumplings and tofu. the Hak rolls are a must-order, though. definitely an interesting comfort food with the right amount of flavors, carbs, protein and fat to cure lunchtime hunger. each Hak roll is $2.50 the staff are fast and packaged up your food to go neatly.
Love the tofu!! Its so so good! Exactly the taste I had back home, and I’ve never had tofu like this in the US. The tofu is firm and the juice is delicious. The rice roll is filled with scallion, dried shrimp, and sesame. Its very savory. The sesame oil makes it smell really good. The roll is on the firmer side compared to the guangzhou style cheong fung. Its very unique and definitely worths a try if you never had it before. The owner is super nice, friendly to chat with and even gave me the roll for free haha. Would def come back again to try the dumplings as well!
This place hits the spot every time! The rice rolls with mini dried shrimps and scallions are perfect for a quick but filling meal, and the tofu is a comforting play on a classic.
You would never guess this well rolled up nice sized noodle bundle is actually soft enough with the prefect bit firmness. It is not very salty, which I prefer but to others, ask to see if the nice gentleman will give you more sauce. It is your classic oily grease spoon comfort food, so please be considerate this is not a dieter's snack. For me one was plenty as a meal but I think if I was hungry I need to add an order of tofu, which I will try next time. FYI it is not located on E. Broadway it shares 88 E. Broadway's building but it is a small storefront located on the side on Forsyth Street. Give it a try, old school Chinese food, my uncles and aunts eats these for breakfast, lunch, snack...The service was friendly and quick.
