Halibut Point State Park

Story

Halibut Point State Park and Halibut Point Reservation are parallel parcels of conserved, oceanside land located on Cape Ann in the town of Rockport, Massachusetts. Once the Babson Farm granite quarry, the properties are cooperatively managed by the Trustees of Reservations and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The adjacent Sea Rocks area is owned by the town of Rockport and is also open to the public.HistoryThe granite that makes up Halibut Point is estimated to be 440 million years old. It was quarried here as early as 1840. The scale of operations grew when the Babson Farm quarry was acquired by the Rockport Granite Company. Those operations ended with the collapse of the Cape Ann granite industry in 1929. Halibut Point Reservation was created when the Trustees of Reservations acquired a parcel on the east side of the quarry in 1934. In the last years of World War II, the remaining quarry area saw new usage with the construction of a 60ft fire control tower that was intended to assist in aiming the coastal weapons defending the harbors at Boston and Plymouth. In 1981, the state purchased of land, resulting in the creation of Halibut State Park.Flora and faunaThe quarry is filled with water, with a maximum depth of about at its lowest spot. Due to shallow soil, constant onshore winds, and a history of frequent fires, the point's vegetation includes few trees. Catbriar, bayberry, blueberry, arrowwood, shadbush, and wildflowers grow among the ledges. Snails, hermit crabs, and sea stars can be found in the tide pools. In winter, seabirds such loons, grebes, and ducks can be seen feeding offshore.

To say this place was quintessentially New England really wouldn't do this park justice. A light house, a stormy shore, great trails. This place had it all. I felt ready to start a novel by the end of my trip. Do yourself a favor, search for an appropriately overcast and windy day, put on a windbreaker, and make your way over to Halibut. Take in the salty smell of New England and reminisce upon the maritime greatness that was Massachusett's past.

Great foot trails along the coast. Old granite quality and WW 2 era spypost.

It's a worth while short hike/walk around a, now water filled, Quarry right next to the Bay. Parking is currently $5 per car, cash/card accepted at the Kiosk. There is a self-guided tour map that explains at the details of the Quarry and its history next to the parking lot. Also don't miss the carved statue on the east side of the trail next to the picnic tables. I could not find any detailed information on it, but it was beautifully carved.

A short walk transports you to a tranquil seaside setting full of colorful tidal pools. There still remains signs of the old stone harvesting industry. If you look closely, you will find short pieces of straw in cracks where they used the power of expanding straw to split the rock into sheets. The quarry is really cool, a large pool of fresh water, just feet from the vast crashing ocean. Quite a setting with literally thousands of great photo opportunities. Pack a lunch, bring a friend or a group of kids. There is plenty to see & do for hours. Oh, wear strap on sandals, hiking boots, tennis shoes, but skip the flip flops, they will only impair your explorations.

Educational self guided tour. Plenty to do and see for the entire family. Great scenery all year round. An easy hike around the query. Plenty of wild life around and in the tide pools.
