I don't know what happened to this place, but the food is just not good here anymore and the prices are not at all justifiable. Santorini in Fountain Square is where you want to go for excellent Greek food.

Hellas Greek Restaurants Indianapolis is fast becoming my post Sunday morning yoga/Pilates/Boot camp meal of choice. The sandwich is meaty and bread and oily enough to quench that post-workout thirst, and its proximity to coffee (Ritual) and juice (Juice Shop) does not hurt.

Years ago our Uncle Jimmy Patridis used to take us to Hellas Restaurant. The food was great and Uncle Jimmy could get retsina wine. Uncle Jimmy passed away recently and in his honor we went to Hellas. I was suspicious when the menu indicated that there were potatoes in the Moussaka. I thought that perhaps this was a more traditional recipe than I was used to. Since Moussaka is so ubiquitous I thought I was on safe ground. I was wrong. It was awful and only contained one extremely thin slice of eggplant. So much for the ultimate traditional eggplant dish of moussaka. My husband had the gyros and it was dry and just plain nasty. I suspect that the restaurant is using pre-sliced microwaveable gyros meat instead of the traditional 'hunk' of meat that gets sliced fresh for each customer. I have had better food in a truck stop and paid quite a bit less. I was sad that our Uncle Jimmy had passed but sadder that I spent almost fifty dollars for an inedible dinner. P.S. I checked four cookbooks including the one that Uncle Jimmy had given me. There are no potatoes in Moussaka. I suggest that the management of Hellas invest in a copy of Greek Cooking for the Gods by Eva Zane. Any good reviews for this place must have been written by non-Greeks.
