All members of the Police Department are committed to establishing and maintaining close ties to the community, which includes identifying and responding to community needs. The Department acknowledges that our relationship with the community through social media plays an integral part in our community relations and we intend to provide information to the community through social media.
The Department maintains a Facebook page for the purpose of sharing information with the public, which is a moderated online discussion site and is not a public forum. The Chief shall determine those persons in the Department who shall be allowed to create posts on the Department’s Facebook page.
The Department is not responsible for, and neither endorses nor opposes, comments posted on the Department’s Facebook page. Commenters are personally responsible for their own comments or information placed on the Department’s Facebook page.
The Department will not edit comments or block individuals from posting. However, the Department reserves the right to remove comments, which include but are not limited to the following:
Obscenity;
Child Pornography;
Fighting words;
True threats;
Defamation;
Speech harmful to children;
Promotion or advertisement of a business or commercial transaction;
Promotion in favor of or in opposition to a candidate campaigning for elective office; or
Copyrighted material if posted without the proper authorization.
Pursuant to the Minnesota Data Practices Act and the Hermantown Police Department Data Practices Procedures, only public information may be posted on social media. Furthermore, postings on social media that are deemed to be records shall be retained pursuant to the Records Retention Schedule.
