Historic Jamestowne

About

Historic Jamestowne preserves, protects and promotes the original site of the first permanent English settlement in North America.

Story

On May 14, 1607, the Virginia Company settlers landed on Jamestown Island to establish an English colony 60 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Discovery of the exact location of the first fort indicated its site was a secure place, where Spanish ships could not fire point blank into the fort. Within days of landing, the colonists were attacked by the Powhatan Indians. The newcomers spent the next few weeks working to "bare and plant palisadoes" for a wooden fort. It was inside this fort that England's first permanent colony in North America took hold and the seeds for the United States of America grew. And here today you can learn from the experts who are adding vibrant details to the Jamestown story with their archaeological research.

We had such a great time here. The location itself is lovely and picturesque with stunning views of the James River. It was easy to navigate a stroller everywhere we wanted to go, which was a huge plus. We got to go on the archaeology tour and our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. It is so cool that this place is still an active archaeological dig site--and the museum on site has things they've actually found right there. We grabbed lunch at the Dale House Cafe and it was tasty and reasonably priced. Loved the outdoor patio area so we could look out at the water while we ate. All in all, Historic Jamestowne is definitely worth a visit!

Another interesting historic venue! Honestly, I used to not care enough about history but learning about the efforts to bring this place back history books and correct the old, misinforming textbooks I grew up knowing... Well, I'd go back again. At the time of this writing, they are still unearthing parts of historic Jamestown with so much more to discover. This is the root of our country and the archaeologists and teams are literally finding new information all the time! You'd think we'd already known our history, but nope!!

We had a gorgeous autumn day to visit Historic Jamestowne. The museum displays were interesting, the movie was terrific in the round, and the ruins along the river simply made us feel connected to our country's early roots. Since we have a 7 day pass, we'll be going back to see the glass blower and drive the island tour. It's a MUST SEE and EXPERIENCE.

I have been to Historic Jamestowne on multiple occasions, and I love it there. It has expansive grounds, and you can visit a reconstruction of the fort. I also enjoyed their on site cafe, which had excellent sandwiches. Lastly, I was impressed to learn that excavation work is still going on there, and I was able to watch as they worked on a dig site.

Their is a ton if history in this part of Virginia but if you only had time for one thing this is what I would do. The archaeological talk is amazing and I would recommend that as a must do. The living history talks are also fantastic.
