il vecchio ~ in the tradition of a Roman neighborhood trattoria

Story

Following the tradition of a Roman neighborhood trattoria, il vecchio presents traditional recipes mainly from the regions of Central Italy: Lazio, Umbria, Tuscany. Everything is made on the premises, from scratch. All our fresh pasta is made by us, or we use imported DeCecco. We don't take shortcuts. Many of our dishes are gluten free, and many of the pasta recipes are vegetarian. The interior of il vecchio was built from 90% salvaged materials. We serve LUNCH Monday through Friday 12 to 1:30 -- $10.85 fixed price with a rotating menu. Dinner every evening from 5 pm. Sunday Brunch from 11 am - 2 pm.

My wife and I came here on our honeymoon. We had several great meals between L.A. and San Fran, and IL Vecchio was one best of the trip. The gnocchi was off the charts. The service was perfect. It was no surprise that every seat was filled on a Tuesday night.

Made a reservation for 8:15 on Saturday night, arrived at roughly 7:50. Lobby was full so my family and I decided to wait outside, to which we alerted the hostesses as we did not want to miss being called. 8:15 rolled around with no updates, so my boyfriend decides to check in with the hostesses. He is met with the rude reply, "well, it's barely 8:15 so it shouldn't be much longer." Family continues to wait, at 8:30 we decide to transition inside as we are getting cold and the lobby has somewhat cleared. At this point we notice that another party of about our size have been waiting for roughly the same amount of time so I decide to prompt and ask if they have made reservations. They have, and it happens that their reservation is also for 8:15 (at this point it's 8:45 and we are being told it's just a few more minutes) - the floor manager then comes out to greet the other family, acknowledge their wait, and offer them free appetizers. All of which transpired in front of my family and the hostess. At this point, the hostess and I make eye contact, and I'm waiting for her to pipe in and explain that we have also been waiting - however she made th decision to not speak up. As the other family I seated, she kindly thanks them for the wait, however does not extend us the same courtesy as we were seated. My frustrations stem from the fact that 1) we were not treated in the same manner as a family with nearly identical circumstances 2) it was not acknowledged. As for the food, it was 3.5/5 - I've had better Italian food (Lillian's in Santa Cruz, Sodini's in San Francisco). Incredibly upset and disappointed with their customer service.

Excellent all round Italian restaurant. Great food, hand made pasta, affordable prices and friendly service. Can be a wait but worth the effort.

Everything pretty good here. Food wasn't outstanding but was very good. Service good. Can't fault it. Only gripe was it was very hot in there, AC would have been good. Also you need to turn up more than 30 mins before closing time or you won't get in.
