I am a graduate and while I was pretty upset that my parents sent me there, it was the best thing that they could have done for me and my family. I was wasting time with losers in town and blowing off school. My parents were the enemy and I just used them for a free place to eat and sleep. After getting over the shock of being sent away things started to get better and we started communicating like a family again. It was def hard and some days were very frustrating but the staff was mostly fair and seemed to want me and others to do well and graduate the program. I still struggle but find myself using the skills that were taught here. The adult world is much harder now than Ironwood ever was.

I'm sure everything has changed since I, personally, was a resident at Ironwood. I was a resident from May 2007-January 2008. I did complete and graduate the program. I have seen some negative reviews and it bothers me to read how it's mostly bitter kids who were sent there and looking to lash back. It took me about 4 months to actually invest myself into the program, but when I finally allowed myself to accept help, life changed for me in the most positive way possible. I haven't touched any of the drugs i used to do, I actually have a work ethic and I have respect for people, which i assure you, I used to not have. I even went back over the years and mentored two times, the place helped and meant that much to me. There wasn't a single instance myself or any of the 40+ residents i came in contact with throughout my stay, ever endured any form of physical abuse. If a punishment was given, it was dealt accordingly and meant to help you learn the world will not always be fair and sometimes things are going to be hard, but you need to pick yourself up and pull through. Like I said, Ironwood and just about every staff member cared for me. They put in effort to make sure I went home ready to take on the world as a new person, and I did. My family and I owe a lot to this place. I would recommend this course of treatment for anybody who is unsure of the next steps for their child. I was 17 when I was there, I am now 27 with my whole life ahead of me.

I spent a haunting and traumatic 10 months there I was physically abused on multiple occasions. The physical pain was not nearly as bad as the emotional pain. I am utterly broken I went in on march 13 2015. And I left January 7 2016. It is now august 15 2017 and as I type this I am starting to have severe anxiety and flashbacks from the PTSD I have from being there

I came to the difficult decision that at the time I was unable to help my daughter. In searching for help I found Ironwood Maine. I looked at all the items that pertain to my daughter and that they specialize in and it was a great fit. It is not meant to be a short journey. These kids are hurting inside for one reason or another and it takes time for them to actually confront those fears or demons that want to control them. With hard work from the staff AND parents we were able to help my daughter. My daughter was not happy to go but if you talk to her today she is grateful that Ironwood was able to save her life. She is a different person today, in a great way. I have Ironwood to thank for this. You as the parent need to be able to step back and allow Ironwood to work directly with the kids. Be a team with Ironwood. When you are not the kids know that and can play off that. Their staff is outstanding. All the rules that they have are for a reason. The facility is great. The animals are awesome. I will forever be grateful for the help that was given to my daughter to be able to figure out how to approach life and its obstacles.

Our son Trevor was at Ironwood in 2013 for almost a year. It was the hardest decision we ever had to make...but it was the best one we ever made. It was not only difficult emotionally but financially...but our son was talking about taking his own life on a regular basis. How could we NOT do everything in our power to help him? Before we made the decision, we spoke to other parents that had their children at IW previously. All were very honest about how difficult it was, but were very positive about their experiences. These real life accounts made a big difference in our decision making. IW was not easy for Trevor, but that was why he flourished. He had low self esteem and significant anxiety and depression. IW saved his life. He went in hating us but ended up thanking us and saying "I feel like my life started when I got to Ironwood". He learned life skills he would never have experienced without his IW journey. He excelled there for the first time in his life. Graduating early from H.S. and "RED". He learned to believe in himself. He learned to respect himself and others. He still misses it. The bonds he made with staff and other residents were stronger than any he's ever had in his life. As parents, we saw changes in him we'd only dreamed of seeing. He went from a kid that couldn't even look at a waiter to order a hamburger (he'd tell us what he wanted with the server standing right there!) to a kid that has a strong hand shake, will look you in the eye when speaking to you in an audible, confident voice. He is now almost 21, he has been living on his own, in his own apartment almost 2 years without our financial assistance. We had ups and downs after he returned home and was transitioning back to "normal" life. He's still a work in progress...but he is doing amazingly well. He is now a licensed professional fisherman, his lifelong dream. He has been working full time and just recently branched out on his own starting his own tile business. We have a great relationship with our son. We are so proud of him. IW is a special place. We have recommended and will continue to recommend IW to anyone that may have a teen with emotional or behavioral issues. We will forever be grateful for Ironwood.
