UPDATE 3/20/17: It was just announced that this is one of many Penny's stores shutting down across the country this year. With this particular location's lack of interesting products and creative identity, this closure comes as no surprise, sadly. A missed opportunity for a great business that should serve as an anchor in downtown La Grand. . . This store has very VERY little selection, and I always walk out empty handed. They don't have any of the cool stuff that newer Penny's typically stock. If they were smart, they would take advantage of the fact that it's an amazing old JC Penny store from the 20's - the inside has no character, unique products or charm. A good building ruined by lack of vision.

There is No longer a Penny's store in LaGrande Oregon! Went out as of the end of July 2017.

Our JCPenney is small and the people are friendly. It is the only one serving the rural community in Union, Baker, and Wallowa counties so of course it is closing :( very sad for us. I has been here for over 100 years. The next closest is Pendleton which is also on the list. It was opened in 1911 and has continuously served it's community, but the bottom line is money and we just don't compare with the million plus in the city that don't need the store. So Eastern Oregon, that's all she wrote.
