Story

The Jefferson Memorial Forest is a forest located in southwest Louisville, Kentucky, in the Knobs Region of Kentucky. At 6500acre, it is the largest municipal urban forest in the United States. The forest was established as a tribute to Kentucky's veterans, and was designated as a National Audubon Society wildlife refuge.FacilitiesThe forest offers over 35 miles of various hiking trails, including several which offer views of downtown Louisville. Several discrete usage areas are featured, including the Tom Wallace Recreation Area, with the 7acre Tom Wallace Lake; the Paul Yost Recreation Area, and the Horine Conference Center. Camping and fishing are both permitted. Tom Wallace Lake is stocked with trout and catfish once a year. Tom Wallace Recreation Area features various handicapped-accessible facilities, including a fishing dock and a 1560ft-long natural trail, the Tuliptree Trail. The Horine Conference Center is a popular field trip destination for Louisville schools. The forest property is operated as parkland by Louisville Metro Government.A hiking trail, the Siltstone Trail, traverses much of the forest from east to west. There are several local hiking trails, in addition. Horine also features many hiking trails and both the Paul Yost and Tom Wallace Recreation Areas have horse trails. No mountain biking is permitted in the forest at this time, but the low traffic roads and hilly terrain afford road cyclists many challenging routes through the forest and surrounding areas.

The hiking trail I was on was very nice, although Savery slippery from the fall leaves. Enjoyed it very much. Also did a work "team building" day here several years ago that was very well put together.

Great place to bring the whole family for a hike. We were there during November and spent the day with our dogs crunching through leaves. The Purple Heart Trail is great for beginners looking for a workout.

Went here for the first time with a buddy of mine, I loved it, didn't see a lot of nature, but what I did notice is that the paths were wide in many places and nice pic locations o if you got an eye for it and lots of trails. We took the mile long trail, which took us by a small lake in the forest, be careful on some trails though, if you get off and wonder a bit, it may be hard trying to find your way back to it, but beautiful and brought back memories of my days at Otter Creek.

Great park. Lots to explore and close to the city. Very nice campground too where you have trees separating sites.

It's one of Louisville's beautiful parks. This one is a little more off the beaten path as it's huge and furthest from the city. They have wonderful regular trails and more rugged ones. They also have wonderful programs. Perhaps their most well know is the Forest Fest. Would totally recommend all the time.
