Krause's Cafe

About

Now Open! German classics, Texas favorites. Grab a brew with your crew or wind down for the day with any choice on tap at Krause’s Cafe.

Story

In 1959, Kermit Krause bought “Gene’s Place” from his dad and Krause’s Cafe was born. Serving only a noon meal, Krause’s was frequented as a saloon and became known for their beer, dominos and card games. It’s our hope that Krause’s Cafe will forever be a New Braunfels staple, serving as a gathering place for family and friends.

Let me start out by saying that the hamburger was one of the best that I have ever had! Amber, was so attentive and nice. I love to have a server who is polite and attentive. The root beer is not worth the over $3.00 dollars that I paid. Need a better hostess as she was never aware of the people coming in. I stood there until someone called her attention. I saw this with a few other patrons who came in. Loved the Hamburger...Just an added note..TOO MUCH SALT added to chips and burger!

First off, a disclaimer: German feed is just not exciting to me. However, curiosity got the better of me when we were downtown last weekend. And in the spirit of the place, I ordered the jagerschnitzel with sides of mashed potatoes and purple sauerkraut. The schnitzel was ample and pretty good as far as schnitzels go, which is only so far. The mushroom sauce on top definitely added to the experience. The potatoes were actually quite tasty and the sauerkraut was...well...sauerkraut. I think I really messed up by not skipping the German food and going for the Cuban sandwich the guy had at the next table--that thing looked GREAT. Other than the food, our server was fantastic and on her game all night. The hostess did a great job of explaining our seating options. The building itself is really nice, with basically 3 seating options (dining room, bigger dining area with huge big screen television, and covered outdoor seating), and live music on Saturday night was nice.

We came in for a quick bite for lunch. The service, location and cleanliness at Krause's is great! The food is a little 'off' for German. Hubs go the the sausage and cheese plate, I think he liked it OK. He has spent some time living in Germany, so it takes a lot to impress him. We got some fries to share, I got a fresh salad. We appreciate authenticity and are of the opinion that Mexican food shouldn't really be on the menu of a German restaurant. I get that it's Texas, but when was the last time you saw Schnitzel at a Mexican restaurant menu? I think this restaurant would be much better if it maintained a TRUE German menu.

The interior was fairly spacious and open. There is outdoor long bench seating as well as a couple of small tables adorning the entrance. We ordered 3 buttermilk pancakes, two breakfast sandwiches and a green juice. The pancakes were light and fluffy. One sandwich was on a bagel with bacon. The bagel was slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The bacon was crisp like we prefer. The other sandwich was on a bun with sausage. The bun was toasted; as was the bagel. It was also slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The sausage was flavorful and slightly spicy, but not hot for the sake of being hot. I won't comment on the green juice other than it wasn't my cup of tea; however, my breakfast partner enjoyed it. Overall, an excellent breakfast and we look forward to returning sometime for lunch.
